I recently read an article about E85 regarding the Fed. fuel tax in Kansas being REDUCED from $.24 to $.17 on E85. Current prices are gas: $2.10 vs E85 $1.75. The article went on to say that E85 gets 10% LESS mileage. I was led to believe that E85 delivers 30% LESS mileage. If one accepts the 10% mileage number than multiplying $1.75 times 1.1 (110%) = $1.93, then the E85 is the better deal here. It's cheaper than the $2.10 gas pump price. If one accepts the 30% reduction the gas is a better deal. $1.75 times 1.3 (130%)= $2.28. Who do we believe here anyway?
Ethanol is a big farce. ADM is the one who is going to be the big winner when all is said and done. E-85 will deliver 27% less mileage than gasoline. A vehicle that gets 30mpg on gasoline will get 21.9 on E-85. Read the calculations at http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....rticle_id=3700
There may also be up to $1.00/gallon in federal and state subsidies supporting the price. That money was taken from your pocket in taxes and redistributed to ethanol producers. We have a problem and ethanol is not the solution.
I agree ethanol is NOT the answer unless you're a member of the Andreas family. You know the son of that "tribe" that is currently doing federal "time?"
I disagree, Ethanol can be the answer if the big oil companies would simply allow an infrastructure to be built where E85 would not have to be trucked all over. If it could be pipelined in it would be cheaper. Right now, there is not distribution network since Ethanol is corrosive.
It can work, it would support the farmers who were previously paid to NOT grow any crops. The problem is that we are using corn based ethanol instead of sugar cane like Brazil does.
Brazil is totally energy independent now thanks to ethanol. They require every vehicle produced to be FFV and the citizens can buy either gas or E85 depending on price.
Yes, ethanol is less efficient but you are forgetting that it pollutes less and we are not relying on foreign oil as much.
Sorry to hijack the thread but some people are not that informed and put out bogus information. I could go on and on but let's just say that I am a believer IF the right infrastructure is in place.
I live in North Dakota and I am not sure how many plants we have with in a 200 mile radius of where I live and it does not work. All the gas stations were rushing to get E85. Now that the tax credit is gone gas stations are dropping E85 fast. Sure it is great for the environment, farmers, and sticking it to the oil companies but there has to be a better way to spend money. We also have huge problems with bio diesel up in this area. It is a little to cold up here in the winter to use it but Minnesota law says you have to run it. I am for clean air but there is no common sense anymore.
