Determining Pushrod Length

I just finished putting my D3VE heads back on my engine. I had oversize stainless steel race series valves installed. These valves are approximately .090 longer than the stock valves. I installed the Crane 99672 retainers to bring the springs back down to spec height.

Since I am using Crane Roller Rockers, Crane Springs, and Crane Lifters, I decided to use the Crane procedures for setting the lifter preload. I put Crane shims under the pedestals to get the recommended lifter preload of .020 to .060. I ended up with .060 shims under most of the pedestals and .080 under a couple of the pedestals.

It makes me a little nervous having the pedestals that high on the pedestal mounts. Does anybody out there have any experience with running the rocker arms like this, or would it be a better option to try to find .060 shorter pushrods? Due to time restraints, I would rather not have to take it back apart at this time, but if it is going to be a problem I may have to.

I put a motor together last spring for a stock pulling truck and had .060 shims under most of the pedestals and didn't have any problems. It has a Lunati cam with over .550 lift and the guy that ownes the truck ran the crap out of it. I don't see you having any problems.

Thanks for the response greenhighboy. I finally got it altogether and took it out for a spin. I can’t believe the increase in power just from a port and polish job and larger valves. I am heading back to Arizona in a few days and will try to address the pushrod length when I get back to CA in the spring.
