For those of you who have stacks, I'd be interested in knowing if your vehicle is A: a commercial vehicle and B: Ever cited for illegal emissions. The DOT regs are acutely clear that the point of emission MUST NOT be within 2 and 11 feet off the ground. Just interested!
I asked the same question to Black Cloud and some of the other stack retailers. The answer I got was check your local regulations. So because of that answer I bought a standard Banks 4". They look cool but didnt want to answer the authorities every time I transfer to another state.

Is that possible? i know stock cars come off the lot with a hell of a lot less distance between the tail pipe and the ground. As a matter of fact, how many vehicles have you seen that have the exhaust pipe above 2 feel 11 inches of the ground? The top of my tailpipe, is 19" from the ground, same as factory......... i must not be understanding what your saying?
Maybe what you meant was it HAS to be within 2 feet 11 inches?

Yep, think you completely misunderstood. I think he was saying it must be below 2' and no less than 11" if exhausted out the top end. Of course in my neck of the woods none of this applies as far as I know. Since I don't know, it goes.
BTW, all state laws are available on line unless you are dealing with a really sad state.
He is saying that it must be less than 2 feet from the ground or over 11 feet if exhaust is routed out the top. This would mean that a lifted truck with a tailpipe may not comply or one with stacks that are too short.
Believe it or not, the wording caught me the same way many years ago... to clarify, it means that the exhaust outlet must either be LOWER than 2 feet, or HIGHER than 11 feet, but NOT inbetween.
I will have to look for it online to see if I find the link for it, but it is in the FHWSA Regs book, somewhere betweens parts 391 and 395, lol
well i had the pleasure of being pulled over by a local cop the other day going 55 in a 35 with my 6 inch stacks and I didn't get a single ticket. I was sweating though. Still not sure why he didn't give me the speeding ticket! but didn't even look at my exhuast. This is in a relatively rural area though.

I was particularly concerned about the ones registered as Commercial Vehicles, tho. Unless it was a DOT cop stopping you they may not have even paid mind.
Even at that, the rule is well over 20 years old, and may be so archaic it no longer applies. The main thrust of the ruling was to keep exhaust away from the average car or truck window that might be open.
The cop that pulled me over for my height violation has the reputation of a complete dick and as he told me everything wrong with my truck how it was, he even pointed to the stacks, and i quote:
cop- "Hey those things look neat, is that the actual exhaust?"
Me- "Yes that is" (i was about to point out the smoke and CCV at idle, blatently apparent in his flashing lights)
Cop- "cool, who did that for you"
Me-
Well, I can find it in old books, but it has been re-written in the newer ones. so I guess it is gone. EXCEPT... california still has it on the books, lol... and since that is where I originated, maybe that's where it stuck. shoot, back in "the DAY", cops used to write us up if our trucks were too high, tires protruding beyond fenders, cars too LOW, volume, etc etc etc....
I drove big trucks for about 15 years when I was haul'n steel I kept a turnout on my muffler that put it at 10ft 3 I was never question about it just all the other good stuff my logbook, registration, tires , brakes blah blah blah .....................
I bumped into a state trooper at the corner BEER store today and he asked me where he could get a set for his personal truck (Dodge 3500). Alabama guys are good-to-go!
