Hello all, I recentyl purchased a 97 f250 psd that I am thrilled with. It has a 3"-4" exhaust and an edge programer already. Under heavy throtle the transmision seems to hunt and or unlock the converter before shifts and then when it does shift it is realy hard. I like firm shifts but it almost knocks your teeth out of your head. Is there a common problem that I may be missing (tps, map sensor, etc) or is this normal with a off the shelf programer?
If its got all that aftermarket stuff you mentioned, the previous owners might have had a shift kit installed... In which case, the hard shifting is normal. There shouldnt really be any hesitation though. It should hit and hit hard from gear to gear with as little hesitation as possible.
Welcome to FTE. Like Dick7.3 says, it might have a shift kit, and that will make it shift harder.
On the other hand you could have a problem. I would get the codes checked. A problem with the trans causes it to have higher pump pressure and shift harder.
You also might try disconnecting the Edge to see if it changes. What is it set for? There have been a few bad Edge units. You might need a new one.
if the previous owner had a shift kit installed into the transmission valve body and your stacking a tuner on top of it you could have your line pressures too high and this would cause problems you described. Mine did the same thing previous owner had tranny rebuilt and was using a tuner on it when I bought it. Caught mine too late and it toasted the tranny. Worth having the pressures checked by a reputable shop with and without the tuner to save yourself some $$$
