fuel filter housing

my 88 f250 7.3 diesel was pouring fuel out of a port on the top of the fuel filter housing...This is an international part and the dealer was ordering one from Detroit...I had them fax me a picture and found out that the port is no longer there as newer models have an external fuel heater and mine in internal...Ford Canada put me through to Obsolete Ford Parts who could not locate one...I searched a wreckers shelves and found mine,,,,it installed beautifully however it also leaks a very small amount of fuel...Truck runs amazingly better and starts up like never before....I am told that moisture and air was entering at that point.....anyways ...does anyone know if this can be plugged off somehow and with what if it does start to pour fuel again...doubt if I could find another....I have very limited knowledge of this stuff....thanks

Welcome to the FTE IDI Forum, Janice. I'm not sure what port you are talking about - though some others may be - just based on your description.

Can you post a picture? If you have a digi-cam and can get the picture onto your computer you can then upload it into your gallery where we can take a look at it.

janice.leskum,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

I am betting the fuel heater connection, it should have O rings as the seal.

i hate to piggyback on this thread, but, mine leaks a little, also. How does one get that thing out of there to replace the oring...or it is it better to get another kind of fuel filter...ie old chevy dual diesel filter assy and jury rig it into place?

If you turn the lid over and remove the round unit, there is an o ring that I replaced, however there is still a leak...my friend says there is an internal heater that we really don't need in the milder climates...He tried several sealants on the plastic insert but none of them sealed it...The dealership could not get any answers from their technical advisory people<<<

Janice,

go to this website http://tinypic.com/

and click on browse. You will then be able to search your computer for the picture in whatever file it is in. find the file and click open. it will put the file destination in the image slot and then click upload. (usually pics are way to big so I open them with paint and then resize them. then you can add arrows, and words. save that file and upload it.

after uploading you will see three links.

the middle one is for forums like this.

just copy and past that like below a discription like this:

when it shows up on the forum it will be a picture that anyone can see.
I had a picture of my filter housing (not water seperator) and labeled the spots with the paint document.

if you go to programs, then accessories, then paint(a little icon shows paint pouring out)

with paint, open the document, click file, go to "open" file and then look for your file. it is easier for me at least to save the file to the desktop and search the desktop for the file I want, but you can do it either way. sorry for a long post and if I was too elaborate, I dont know how much you know about computers. I just learned this posting picture thing recently myself.

later

I just repaired my fuel heater on my 89 7.3 f250. There are 2 o-rings on the fuel heater. When you remove the heater from the cap of the filter, you'll see one on the heater assembly neck. I replaced that one, but found it was still leaking fuel around the spade terminal, so tore it apart again. This time popped the heater apart, pushed the spade down to dismantle the heater further and there is another o-ring inside to keep fuel from getting up through the spade terminal. Hope this helps.

Incidently, I called Ford to see what a new fuel heater would cost, before I tore the old one apart...$157.95! Wasn't really hard to dismantle and reassemble it. I put a little black silicone on the o-ring to help it slip in easier and to help it seal a little better, in case the size was a hair off since I just got the o-rings at the hardware.

When I called ford...they quoted a part that would take 3 weeks to come from Detroit...I am in Canada therefore the part was 356.00 incredible rip off...I'm used to this nonsense because I have an 81 Mercedes 300 D diesel hobby car...every time Mercedes has quoted me 400-2000.00, I would get stubborn and tear the thing apart myself...The last one was my turn signal /hazard flasher...story was, it couldn't be fixed and had to come from Germany...my car was made there....I took the flasher unit out , pulled out the bulb that wasn't needed and lo and behold,,,the signals worked perfectly...also, the blower motor, 3 screws and 10.00 worth of brushes,,,turned the armature on a lathe and saved 500.00...
