I'm nearing completion of my 1955 F-100 restoration, and I'd like to get antique plates. Can anyone tell me of a good insurance company to get antique auto insurance. THANKS IN ADVANCE. JOHN
I checked out a few Antique/Collector Car Insurance companies and found the rates to be competetive between all of them. What I'm specifically looking for is something that covers it as a daily driver, not just a parade vehicle. That reduces the field a lot.
My problem was a little rider that ALL the remaining policies seem to have that the other cars have to be 1980 or newer in order to write insurance for my truck. Wierd.
State Farm is able and willing to write insurance for anything with an agreed value coverage. An appraisal is usually required, depending on the agent's preference.
Check with your local independant agent, most handle companies like Haggerty, Collector cars etc. Some of the large companies don't offer "antique" vehicle ins but will give you a "break" on mileage driven and don't have an agreed-upon-value.
sschev: Glad to hear that your project is near completion. Are you planning to use your prize possession as a daily driver?? As Randy Jack says this limits your field considerably. While the antique license plates sounds like a good idea beware of any restrictions that may be placed on you by your state. I had Horseless Carriage tags on a Model T for many many years. Here in California there was legislation that planned restrictions on when a Horseless Carriage could be on the highway - while the state charges the same annual fee as any other car. They went bye-bye.
Most all of the Antique/Classic insurers - Condon and Skelly and others have a clause that the vehicle is maintained for parades, club activities and historical events. One could argue that each time the vehicle leaves your garage it is a historical event. What the agent from Maryland Casualty told me is that I should not drive it to work every day - bottom line.
So, do your homework but most of all, find time to really enjoy the fruits of calories that you have expended on this project.
I have Grundy. $165/year. No limit on Mileage, agreed upon value, and no deductable. But, it can't be a daily driver and must be garaged. Good luck, Jag
