New to the PSD area. Its a 94 with 145K on it. I bought if from my Aunt. They had a rebult transmission put in it at 125K. The tranny came with a 24mos./24k mile warranty. That was 4 yrs ago. Not sure on how its supposed to shift but on the rare occassion I do stand on it to some degree, entering the freeway, the shift from 1st 2nd seems a little sloppy. No slip just not a definate "pop" into gear. Now from 2nd to 3rd it is a little more snappy and going into overdrive its real snappy. Is this normal. I hope this makes sense.
When the trans was rebuilt, was it done stock? Were there any up-grades put in? Has the trans been serviced? Any CEL light? Any OD light blinking?
A stock trans is not known for a real snappy shift, more like a slide into gear. If it has not been serviced yet it might be a good time to do it and see if it improves.
As far as I know it was done stock. I have all the paper work at home. There have been no upgrades to the tranny or the vehicle except I just replace the down-pipe. No CEL or any other lights. Has not been serviced yet. I am planning on doing that this month. This is my first auto in years and I want to take care of it. If I'm not mistaken they recommend every 40K on the fluid. I'm planning on every 6 months that will be between 25 & 30K.
I never go past 30k on the fluid. 20 to 25 if I am towing a lot.
Start with a good service. Drop the pan and do it right. Buy a new gasket and filter. See what it looks like in the pan. It should have a magnet. Also look for a drain plug in the converter. If you are not towing much a stock trans is fine. While you are under there, check your u-joints. If you are going to tow or race around, I would buy some good gauges.
I'm planning on changing it this weekend. While I'm there I want to install a drain plug in the pan. How do I get the drain plug on the convertor? Bumping it over like you would a gasser. Thbis thing fires up real real quick. With proper maintenance how many miles can someone expect out of these trans.. I know, thats a loaded question, I will use it to pull the boat and the horses, OCCASIONALLY. But, neither one of those will put any bind on this truck. I had a company truck a few years back with a 6 cyl. and it pulled these fine. I assume your talking tranny temp gauge. Thats on the list of things to do. I've heard mixed things, but at what temp are you starting to do damage?
