My Father-in-laws 1999 F250 (7.3 Powerstroke) is missing. We suspect an injector. We ran a scan using a scanner from a parts store. The "Service Engine Soon" light is on, but the scanner did not show codes. A friend at the maintenance garage here at work will run a scan on it tomorrow using a scanner from SnapOn.
I talked to another mechanic who said that one would need to run a 'drop cylinder test" to determine if an injector was bad. No problem. Only $40. I mentioned that my father-in-law would probably replace the injectors himself. We found them on-line for $119 each as opposed to $385 through the dealer. When I mentioned replacing them ourselves, this mechanic stated that we would need specialty tools to replace the injectors. Is this correct? If so, what tools do we need?
First off, if the SES light is on, you do have codes in there. Most of the scan tools at auto parts stores will not retrieve them. But, the Snap On scanner may be able to.
Second, you don't need any special tools to replace the injectors. Basic hand tools will take the IC tubes off to help gain access to the valve covers. Standard sized bolts are on those, 13 mm I think. Once you get the VC's off, the injectors just have a single bolt holding them in, which I believe is an allen head. Kwik has a writeup on injector replacement - let me see if I can find it.
Bro in law just volunteered to do mine when need be. Says piece of cake and to not buy special tool. I believe the special tool is to pull the injectors and he made it sound like you use a prybar or some other type of prying device and they pop out no problem. He just did a set on their work trucks the day before I asked.
