Pyrometer

I finally got around to tapping my exhaust manifold and installing the probe this weekend. But now that I have that done, the gauge isn't working. I checked to make sure I have the red and yellow wires hooked up right. I also checked to make sure I have 12volts switched power to the gauge. Has anyone heard of a bad pyro gauge? Or maybe its the probe? Any thoughts on how to test? It is an Auto Meter Ultra Lite II gauge.

Thanks.

i having samilar problem with my autometer ultra lite 2. I installed the egt gauge this weekend and at first the temps were around 800 at idle, which i know is way off, then like 1400 when my high idle kicked, even farther off. So i shut the truck down to recalibrate the gauge, when the gauge came back on it went all the way past 1600 and right up to the bottom of the needle. So now my gauge reads like -2 at all times. Im going to call teh place up where I got it and hope I can get a direct replacement. I know autometer has a lifetime warrenty, but who knows how long it will take for them to fix teh gauge and send it back to me.

Your gauge does more than mine. This morning on my drive to work it went up to about 50 for a while and maxed out at about 125 degrees. I was just wondering if anyone knows of a way to test to see if it's the gauge or the probe that is bad.

So tonight I disconnected the wires on the back of the gauge going to the probe and hooked them up backwards. I drove for a bit and the gauge actually move a bit. Then I rewired them correctly and now the gauge is working... Very strange.

But now that the gauge is working it seems to flutter around a lot. Especially on acceleration. Once I am cruising it smooths out at a constant temp. But while it is going up the needle flutters back and forth. Is this normal?

I also got my Accufab Power elbow installed tonight and hooked up the boost gauge. Now that all my gauges are working I guess I can order an SCT soon!!!

Thats really strange. If you have the Ultra-Lite II's you should have a wire harness that connects to the back of the gauge with a plug...so it can only go in one way (12v light, Power, Ground, and Pyro).

Without looking at how you installed it there are only a few things to check:

1. Wiring
a. 12v Light (White): Tapped to dimmer wire
b. Power (Red): Fused to Key on Hot
c. Ground (Black): Self explanitory (make sure it is good)
d. Pyro wires: Make sure it is not kinked or cut. Roll the excess wire and stow it somewhere.
2. Pyro Location
a. Make sure it is centered inside the manifold and not touching anything inside.

I was wrong. I just checked and I have Ultra Lite's. They have 2 wires for the light, then a red and black for switched power and two terminals for the red and yellow that go to the probe. I am pretty confident that the probe is mounted right and not hitting anything. The wires from the probe are coiled under the truck and wire tied back. Then they lead up through the firewall to the gauge. I think something must be wrong with the gauge.
