Recently, my '89 has been idleing at 1000 rpms. Is that higher than it should? I don't remember it being that high. Its EFI, can I change the idle speed?
Also the red "ENGINE" light comes on every once and a while. Its different than the amber "check engine" light. is it emissions or what?
Have the codes pulled. The only thing I know of that is a common problem that increases the idle RPM is the IAC sensor but it usually idles higher than 1K. More like 2 or 3K rpm or it won't idle at all. The light may be telling you everything you need to know so pull the codes.
I had this problem a few years back with my 88 TBI Chevrolet p/u and it ended up being the throttle body gasket. Something that will be easy to check. Also, you may want to check the Idle Air Control. You can do a search on IAC or idle air control and find lots of info. I recently cleaned mine and that seemed to help the idle slightly on my EFI460, but it was not idleing high, it didnt want to idle at all.
1.TB gasket
2. IAC
usually the red light indicates a more serious problem. Either way, the light is a good sign, because it can likely lead you in the right direction.
Red=warning
Amber=caution
Good Luck
Eric
