02 escape xlt 3.0 v6. 71702 miles. wifes car, i do all routine maintenance. sun. morning, went to leave, damn thing starts skipping a little out of nowhere. about a half mile up the road, engine begins running terribly then light comes on flashing. turn around and go home. so its football all day mon and i dont touch it, car doesnt move. today, ditch work early and was going to do plugs which i have learned is a major pain as far as plugs go. so anyway today the engine light is on steady, no flashing. drive to the parts place, runs like a champ. we pull a #4 cyl. misfire code out then erase it. ive driven it home and around a little more, runs perfect so far. im sure as hell not tearing the intake off this thing until i get a better idea of what this might have been. any ideas out there? anyone had something similar, escape or not?
IMHO, what you pulled up on OBD machine is exactly what happened, #4 plug had a mis-fire, but evidently corrected itself. #4 plug could be going bad or the coil has an intermittent short. I would say it probably will happen again, maybe not, but IMHO, either you got a bad plug or the coil is on its way out.
a friend told me that it could have been because we had a couple of days straight of rain and something got wet somehow. i have indeed heard of this on older vehicles with actual distributors and rotors and points and all but didnt think this kind of stuff happened anymore.
It could be the COP boots as they deteriorate over time and moisture can get in there and cause the miss. The Mariner is too new, but on my Super Duty I had to replace some and they are around $5 each.
