Does anyone know what gears they put in stock on a 93 Ranger 2.3 XLT stick? I just bought the truck and was driving it home and I was shifting it into 5th at 55mph I am thinking this thing has tall gears. Any idea what they get for milage too?
Probably 3.73s, maybe 3.45s at the least. The tallest gears I've seen in a Ford vehicle equipped with a 2.3L SOHC were 3.08s back in the early 80s when they were trying to squeeze every last bit of mileage out of everything.

Yup, I've got an '85 with 3.08:1 gears, average milage is 25, so I like them!!

Yeah, in this regard I am not happy with my 2001 2.5L either. Is it a big deal to swap gears out of the differential?
5th gear is only an overdrive gear, shifting into 5th at 55 isn't bad. I know in the later years, that the 4 cylinder came with 3:73's and could be had with 4:10's. A gear swap should be done by profesionals, I was quoted 250.00 with me suppling the new gear set.
Hmm, yeah, it was worth it, thats the easiest way to make power with the lima. I went from 3:73 to 4:56 in an 01 ranger with the 2.5. I got the gears from summit racing. They were richmond gears and were like 170.00$ if I remember right.
I don't have that truck anymore, got me a 4x4 with 4:10's and bfg 265/75-16's. The best that I can remember, I was turning a round 2,600 rpm's at 55 and did use more gas, You may only want to go with 4:10's.
Thanks for sharing your experience...After giving it thought, I think I am going to stay with what I have. I was hoping for lower revs on the highway, but the 2.5 struggles enough as it is. Stock gearing seems like the best compromise, for the type of driving that I do...
