I am building up a 1966 428 engine +.040. The pistons i have are designated 10.2-1. Will this engine live on pump gas, or will I have to open up the combustion chambers, or other options. Thank you, Bill.
Just hang in there ....there atre a few FTE users that can answer this question with more info than you can imagine but they are currently serving a 3 day suspension if you dont get answers...there will be some on thurs.
Fortunately I didn't participate in that particular thread...
Anyway, piston manufacturer rated compression ratios are rarely if ever accurate. You need to figure it up yourself. Here's a calculator for compression ratio:
Will it live on pump gas? At this point, it's hard telling. It depends on cam timing, what pump gas (87 or 93 octane, E85, etc...), ambient conditions, etc. Ambient conditions would be elevation and outside temperature. There are some good articles on that which I will link to get you started. I will say if you plop a big long duration cam in there with lots of overlap and a late intake valve closing angle you'd probably be ok.

Yeah... and when they sneak back with a 2nd registration to get around the suspension, they get 2 weeks off. Sure hope none of them try something foolish like that, don't you?
Now who the sam hell would go thru the back door with a false registration??
I meen we like FTE and all..But It aint like Sex where ya have too have it!! and by the way Kurts right..you have to put some diffrent combo's down on paper..and run them thru to find out what best suits your needs!!
Normally 9.5:1 is considered the cutoff for pump gas (91 octane). I had 10.5:1 in my 428 and ran pump gas for normal every day driving. If you are going to run hard and can't get 93 octane put in a few gals. of 100 octane or a octane booster.
