I bought this van three weeks ago. It is not a powerstroke like my 1996 E-350 and I wanted to know what can I do to the engine to increase it fule mileage and performance. Also is ther soemthing I can do to my '96 E-350 which is a Powerstroke. The '96 is stock and I have had it top out 141 mph in the Arizona Desert and was very impressed with it. Can I do more to both of these trucks?? Let me know fellas!!
Sure, on your 96 you can get a programmer and you will be greatly amazed at the increase in power. Don't think it is likely to help the economy any, but the power will go up a lot. Also, you might gut or replace the cat with a straight pipe. You won't notice much difference unless it is clogged though. And if you go with the programmer, you might want to invest in a pyro to make sure exhaust temps don't get too high.
And David, the van doesn't have tach, unless you add an aftermarket unit of some kind, so there is no way to tell at what RPM the engine is turning. With 3:55s the engine turns at 1500 at 55 mph, so 110 mph should be app 3,000 RPMs. I don't know what redline is, but 140 mph should = app 3,820 RPMs, and I suspect it would/should be smoking somewhat at that power output.
I have a like new Edge Evo programmer for sale if you are interested. I decided I didn't need that much power, and put it back to stock configuration.

I just didnt think it was capable, I figured you would run out of revs on the engine considering my aux idle controler(made by ford) says I'm running 1830RPM's at 65mph with 3.55's and 235 85 16 tires with a auto transmission.
Sorry this is sort of off topic but how do you make your aux. idle controler show your RPMs? mine doesn't show me anything, but it is lit up.
If it is working it should always show the RPM as the default, especially when the truck is moving. Maybe it can be programmed to show something else, but I don't think so.
