What years were the PI heads adopted? How would I tell if my truck has them? I have an 01 supercrew with 4.6 and want some more HP, what changes were made to the 02s to get the extra hp they have? Also, anyone tried swapping the 3 valve heads onto an older block?
Actually 5.4L's got them in '99 4.6L's got them in '00 and maybe some in late '99, I've heard and read both but have finally figured that all the '99 4.6L's are not PI's. Cars got them in '01 FWIW. I am assuming Ford used up their excess heads on the 4.6L's in '99 then went to PI's when they got rid of their overstock. Nothing changed in '02 compared to '01. The difference between NPI and PI is the intake design for the most part, it is a little bigger and freer flowing, the PI intake alone was most of the power improvement. I haven't seen anyone adapt the 3V heads but I am sure someone has done it, it wouldn't be cheap and would probably require some 1 off tooling.
I also want to say the piston tops in a PI engine are a bit different because I think the combustion chamber is a different size. I know if you put PI heads on an NPI block/pistons the compression ratio will go up a bit and '93 octane is required.
Is it a 4.6L or 5.4L, Mr.G?
On the drivers side, just above and slightly left of the rear exhaust port is the part number of the head with PI under it.
It is a 4.6. It must not be PI as my business partners 03 F150xlt 4.6 crew auto is quicker than my 2000xl 4.6 reg cab short bed 5 speed. And mine weighs about 600 lbs less.
So i guess i dont have the PI heads... Im going to check as soon as i get home.... but let me get this straigt...if i dont have the PI heads and i choose to swap them in.... im going to have pinging problems?....I run 91 octane in my truck now cause of my edge tuner... but i never see any 93 octane around... im in iowa and most people run 89 ethanol... i guess is there anybody that has done a PI swap that can vouch...
You dont need to use anything higher than **** gas at all, period,
whatsoever, for any reason. Unless...you are using an aftermarket
tuner that requires it.
