needed a new trany anyway so I found this 3 on the tree speed
with an over drive . I've shortened the drive shaft and I'm up and
running ,that is except for the over drive . I'm clueless. Is there somewhere out there parts and possible directions. Also will
need a speedometer cable connection thingy.
already like the gearing ratio difference. Strange that the trany
disengages I let off the gas. No motor control just brakes to slow down. No problem yet but I'm going to burn the brakes out on the downside of the hill if I ever go over.
If you want the system to work as original, it can get kind of complicated. The original system had a ignition kill switch on the throttle linkage. When you mashed the throttle in overdrive, it would kill the engine for a second to unload the torque off the overdrive so it could kickdown out of overdrive for passing power. This is part of the reason for the "coasting". It has a "one-way" bearing in the overdrive unit that will not let the torque from the engine hold the vehicle back. You don't need the throttle linkage stuff if you want to operate the unit manually.
check out Border Parts in Spring Valley Ca. east of SanDiego they had all the stuff to make mine work including manuals. Mine was a 59 f100 223 3spd O\D all stock. Take warning when the mainshaft bearings get worn it will jump out of first just before your ready to shift. First gear will hit the revese on the counter shaft and something WILL break, usually about four teeth on first gear on the counter shaft. I broke three at $110 a pop before going to a 3spd top loader. Good luck, Rich
