Will it hurt my engine ('79 351M) to run without any exhaust for a couple of miles? And by no exhaust I mean that I had to remove everything after the manifolds to take off a crappy body lift and will have to either drive it or tow it to the muffler shop up the road to get a new system installed. Should I tow it just to be safe? Or am I ok to drive it as long as I wear earplugs?
Personally I would tow it. You could also just temporarily bolt the manifolds back on with a section of downpipe on each side. It does not matter if they didn't have a gasket and leaked. Just a few bolts would hold them on. it would keep flames from burning up anything in the engine compartment and would prevent any valve warping that supposedly can happen.
Well, the manifolds are still on, just nothing else. I, too have been warned about sucking cold air back into the heads and warping valves, but just aren't sure that the manifolds will prevent that from happening. I suppose they ought to.
I have never seen that happen but then who knows???
Do you still have anything left of the old exhaust? If so hack off a couple pieces of the pipe and bolt them onto the manifolds. At least it gets the flames out of the engine compartment and gives the gases some small chance to cool off.
Remember to drive by the police station and rap on the throttle a few times!
