Question HELP!? Replace oil pump in '55

So we've decided that the oil pump in the 351w is bad and needs to come out of the '55 F100. Needless to say the cross member from the Volare front end is in the way, and looks like the motor needs to go up a bit, OK, alot! Has anyone done a similar repair and if so could you share a little light? No engine hoist so we were going to use the old bottle jack and block of wood.

There is no way to drop the pan the 2" I have to the crossmember, unbolt the oil pump and remove everything at once. That would be too easy. Nevermind, installing the new shaft, pump and pick up would be impossible, back to plan A.

I'm figureing motor mounts, AT mount, lower hose, valve covers (to clear the firewall), don't know about the exhaust (hopeing it has some play), any other ideas?

I have replaced the oil pump in my Volare (Cordoba) clipped, 351W'd 55 Effie without doing ANY of the referenced pains in the butt. I did have the luxury of having my baby on a lift, as opposed to crawling around under it. I was able to remove all the pan bolts and wiggle and waggle the pan out w/o removing a thing. Of course you will have to remove the oil pickup with the pan hanging to grant a little clearance. My motor mounts are home made, perhaps giving me a little more clearance than you have, I don't know. The re-install was a little problematic, but nothing serious. Just a time consuming pain. Smear a great gob of the stickiest grease you can find to hold the pump shaft in the boss while mounting it all back.

Thats kind of what I was thinking to take it out, but it was the install that worried me. I guess it won't hurt, whats the worst that can happen, I have to raise the motor??!! The motor mounts look to be home made as well.

How did you get the retained clip in the right place, trail and error?

Did you put the shaft in (I might use the piece of fuel line trick to hold it from the top!) then the pump and pick up in the pan and then raised it all then bolted the pump in? Whew now is the ONLY time I wish I had a GM motor!!!

I just didn't think that it would clear at all, cuz I've only got 2" of clearance between the pan and the cross member. Glad I asked, you may have just saved me raising the motor! I'll let you know how I make out.

Thanks! Happy New Year

BTW, be sure to buy a new pump shaft b4 re-installing. As mentioned, if you'll just clump a large gob of grease on the end of the shaft b4 inserting, the grease should hold the shaft up long enuf to get the pump in position.

Pump, shaft and gasket. What did you do about the retaining clip? Some folks just put them in from the top and forget the clip and hope for the best if they take the distributor out....

Headers?

Any chance you found headers for your rig? If so, where did you find them?

I did that job several months ago, and don't recall any retaining clip. What does it retain? My truck is not about brute power, and I like it more on the quiet side, therefore we put new Ford exhaust manifolds on it, with dual Flowmaster Delta 50's. Has a nice mellow, powerful tone, and you can actually converse with someone in the cab w/o yelling. Besides, IMHO, headers are a pain.

Good point about the headers! I havn't heard mine run yet, I may just leave it stock.

The retaining clip goes on the oil shaft from the bottom under the casting to make sure the shaft does not come out of the oil pump when you take the distributor out.

Just how did you wiggle yours around? Did you drop the pan and then unbolt the oil pump? And then do it all in reverse?

I don't have it on a lift, so I will have my work cut out for me.

Thanks again. Happy New Year.

man, I swear I don't remember any clip. Guess i better not pull my distributor, huh? Yes, drop the pan and let it "hang" and remove the pickup, then the pump. then you'll just have to work the pan around and hopefully, find enough slack to slide it out backwards. Really it was not that hard. At least with my configuration.. Good Luck and Happy New Year to You.

Here's what it is supposed to look like.

No worries, some of the 351 guys just keep replacing them as they drop in to the oil pan from the top. Look up a 351 oil shaft thread and get some laughs.

Take care!

Yes, the foto jogs my memory. I had in mind an e-clip or circlip that I would have put on. That clip was already installed on the new driveshaft when I bought it. That's what held my shaft in place via all the grease I mentioned earlier.
