Update

Here's the update:

Couldn't get the pump out without lifting the motor, only 2" betwen pan and cross member, couldn't get to the bolts, so lifted the motor 3 inches (may have to touch up the firewall, dang!), got the pan off, pump out and found out they gave me the wrong gasket set, so I decided to get a chrome oil pan as well (don't ask) only to inspect the old pump and found NOTHING wrong with it. Shaft was perfect, fit into the pump, took the pump apart, and didn't find anything wierd. Could it have been the blow out valve? Could he have been spinning it too (?) fast?

Oh well, had to order new gaskets, should have them Wednesday, hopefully put together by the weekend. Now if it primes oil to the head, it was a bogus pump and we'll celibrate, if not....don't let me climb to the second floor!

We'll keep you posted.

The pressure relief bypass was probably coming into play. (fatigued spring) To prime your new pump, just fill with oil, insert shaft and twist by hand till oil spurts out the outlet. If it spurts out the pickup hole, you're twisting the wrong way. Twist it a few times and mount it.

And what about priming the motor, same as stated before, until it comes to the heads?

Thumbs up Theres OIL in them hills!!!

OK, before I tell you the news, I want to thank you ALL for your help on this project. I'm a rooky wrench who has taken on probably more than I should have, but with your help, I have the "bolts" to take it on!

Now for the update: The pan, pickup pump, shaft and gaskets are in (hope I didn't forget anything!) Couldn't get the gaskets to stick to the motor, so I placed them on the pan and crossed my fingers. Had to stand on my head in the engine bay to get the oil pump bolted to the motor (did I mention that the wooden blocks had compressed just enough not to let the new pan in and I had to do it all over again!?) Once I got the pan in, gasket sealer all over my wrists from working in the 3 inches between the pan and the motor, I got everthing bolted in. Upon the initial priming I got good pressure and then a gurgling sound. Frustrated, I stored one of the wrenches in the dry wall and slept on it. Then today after Barrett Jackson, my Corvette buddy (I know, I know) said "hey dummy (its a love/hate friendship) you're motor is sticking up in the air, you're oil is in the back of the pan, you're sucking wind". I put in two quarts extra, spun the drill and walla, oil. Now it ain't flowing out the heads, but I got it as far as the sending unit. Mechanical guage tomorrow, and if I have, what, 40ish psi with the drill, I'm buttoning it up and fireing it up. AFter I bolt back the alternator, fan, belts, steering linkage, trans linkage, sending unit, rad hoses, valve cover, distributer, wires, engine mount, tranny mount, etc.

Guess next time, I'll just pull the motor. I'll give you the PSI report later in the week!!!
