Conanski,

Can you clear that up about what Stryder said about the factory valve springs? I thought the stock valve springs were fine with a cam that had a gross valve lift of just over .500?

Summits website said the same thing about the 31-255-5, its says "no" for computor controlled cam. But when you call the tech at Summit or Comp Cams they say yes. I just think the guy who designs the web pages is putting in the wrong info.

Ryan at fordfuelinjection.com as mentioned to me that the 35-349-8 would work especially if your going roller

I believe the factory valve springs will work, but they may not be optimal in terms of preload for that cam. For the minimal cost involved, swapping in the recommended springs is good insurance.

I called Crane and they said for my 86 302 that the powermax #364112 was the best one for speed density. I ordered one yesterday.

It should work fine considering its pretty much an OEM replacement cam.

This is the cam I am going with I think it looks the best overall, it blows the comp cams away and is probobly a little better than the 444211...JMO. With a set of AFR 185's and a good tune, pistons and supporting fuel system you could get over 400hp out of it... Its the crane 444232

SD Cam

Hi guys. I know this is a really old post but I’m really hopeful that Conanski can help me with this. I’d also appreciate anyone else who is willing to help. I have a 1992 F250 5.8. It was my father in law’s truck before he passed. I am in the middle of rebuilding the engine. It’s 2023 and I can not find a stock replacement for this anyplace. I’ve read all the post on the cams that will work with the stock SD system. Conanski recommend 3 in one post but the only one of those that is still available is the comp cams 35-255-5 Would this cam work well with my truck being that it is completely stock? 3:55 rear gear and C6 auto. Thanks for any help.

I looked on Engine Tech and they show an ES764A as being the cam used from 1984 to 1993. According to their specs which are usually correct that cam is 206/221 @ .050 on a 115 lobe sep in on 113. That seems pretty awful. That cam is available on Ebay as a Melling SYB35. For the earlier engines it shows an ES674 which is 194/194@ .050 on a 107 lobe sep in the engine on 103. I think that in a stock application that would be superior.

Thank you so much Dave for the help. I actually have found the ES764A and ES764 online but can’t find anyone that has either in stock. The Melling SYB-35 I’ve seen but it’s only listed for the F250 5.8 up to 91 according to Melling. Im a 1992. I’m not sure why that would be but thats what scared me away from it…. Not ruled it out yet. Amazon has the Elgin stock replacement cam which I purchased but that was about a month ago and it’s a special order with no estimated delivery date. I want to have it ready for winter which is why I asked about the comp cam. It’s the only one I can actually find in stock anyplace. I’ve seen a lot of stock cams for this online but when i order them it either says out of stock or I receive a refund a day later saying it’s out of stock. any thoughts? Thanks everyone.

I'm running a COMP 35-349-8 in my 302. It runs well, but i think it confuses the system when it's trying to idle. Sometimes it idles steady with no problems, sometimes is surges and stumbles. Can't say for sure what the true cause of that is. But it's not a huge problem for me as I don't idle very much.

One of the worst running vehicles that I can think of that came through our shop was a TBI Chevy that the customer rebuilt himself. We had bored the block etc. He did a good job except for some reason they subbed in the 350HP 327 camshaft. It did a similar thing where the computer acted like it was trying to figure out what to do. Mostly at idle and really light throttle it just ran awful.

This sort of thing doesn't just happen with computer controlled cars. Another time a customer who had a shop had a car come in that they couldn't get to run right. It was about a 69 Olds with a 425. It idled sort of rough and the power brakes didn't work very well. They messed around with it for a while knowing that it had been rebuilt some time in the past. They even took off the timing cover to check to see if they had installed the timing set incorrectly. When it was apart I had them go ahead and pull out the cam. When I plotted it we found the problem It was the W30 cam which is pretty radical. He got a stock replacement cam and it was all good.

Right.

It had this problem long before I ever swapped engines/cam. So I'm sure the cam is "pushing it" but I don't think it's the sole cause either. It still makes good vacuum at idle. And is a "proven to work" part as stated several times in this thread.
