99 Ford Ranger

I have a 99 ford ranger, clutch, 145,000..I have had a abs light on for the longest time and just ignored it until I was able to come up with funds and yet to do that but time has forced my hand but that is not the only problem...now...

I also got a "check engine" signal and went to the nearest auto part store and a code of p0205 was read so that is a sensor but I have yet more problemns now with the truck..

I think it is falling apart on me from the bottom of the truck, I hear sometimes loud thumps, sometimes I am on a clean road and I hear pebbles being kicked up under the truck but I know there is no pebbles.

also, I got my clutch replaced but now I am having a hard time when I am on neautral waiting on a red light or stop sign, It is hell geting it to 1st gear then it is fine and I have been struggling with it for a long time and I found that when I go to fourth gear then to 1st before the cars behind me start honking that I can shift but I know this is not right..

I had comments made-rear difrential, the sequencer, the back tire sensors etc and etc..

can some one please explain to me what is going on..

I don't see a code 205 in my code list.

Can you pinpoint where the thumps and pebble sounds are coming from? My first thought is check your transmission fluid, between the noises and the difficulty of getting into gear.

Does your speedometer work correctly? If so it's an actual ABS problem. Some places will pull ABS codes, you can call your local place and see if they will.

Pilot Ranger I gave the wrong info.. the code was po125, I think I can do that myself. I am concerned about the thump I heard and the little pops I hear undernaeth the truck. yesterday I was at a redlight in Frisco Texas I thought I was hit from behind but that was a loud thump I felt but the truck did not move and I was not hit from behind so it is my truck.

It seems the sounds is coming from the middle part of the truck, not the clutch area but behind it.

I went underneath my truck but I dont know what to look for but the drivetrain I was able to twist it, I dont know if that is natural or not.

the speedometer works but after I gained 25mph then it jumps up and stays working until I come to a stop then again..

I live in Garland, Texas and have a ppg..

With the speed-o acting up, I might suspect the rear ABS speed sensor, located atop the front side of the rear differential.
The speed-o & other things take clues from this sensor.

On the underneath noise, if you have a two piece drive shaft, then your symptoms sorta fit the TSB for lubing the splines on it.

Look in the "Tech Info" thread, atop this forums front page for links & info.

P0125 = Insufficient engine temperature for cosed loop operation. This would suggest a over cooling condition & that kinda points to a stuck open thermostat.

I agree with Zach, check your tranny lube fill level.

Just some thoughts for consideration.

Let us know what you find.

Little confused on your wording. The speedo does or doesn't work properly? If it doesn't, the ABS is probably due to your VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) located on the rear differential. They aren't the most reliable sensor on the vehicle and tend to go out. Thankfully, they're cheap and a quick replace. Does your cruise control work, if equipped?

How much can you turn the driveshaft? Might be your u-joints going out. But it made this thump at a dead stop? You weren't rolling or anything?

ppg?

EDIT: Sorry pawpaw, was typing this as you were typing yours. Didn't mean to copy!

The Speedo stays at the bottom until I gain at least 25mph then it works pretty much until I have to slow down below 25 or stop.

Yes, I was at a complete stop when I heard the thump somewhere in the rear differential area. yes even more friends told me that the rear differential also could be causing the VSS to act up..

I had a friend tell me that my clutch cable needs adjusting?.. I mentioned that when I come to a red light or complete stop I have to let my foot off the the clutch and then surpress the clutch again, getting to my 1st gear is like pulling teeth.

note: I found it easy to get my 1st gear by looking for open slots normally my 4th gear slot then going to my 1st gear is easy.

The rear ABS sensor can be easily checked (It's on the differential). It should read around 1.4K ohms. Disconnect the wires to it, and measure it with an Ohm Meter.
I had one go out, and it measured open.

With an inductive type sensor, they can go bad, but still get a resistance reading. But, in your case, an open type of failure can be tested for with an
ohm meter.

The thump or clunk, as suggested is probably the drive shaft slip yolk, have it lubricated, if the noise dissapears, thats it. In the meantime, it probably wont hurt anything, mine clunked for years, I finally lubed it and no sound, no probelms.

There is no adjustment on the clutch of the Rangers, they are Hydrolic.

Joe,

You should still consider greasing the drive shaft yoke spline.
