I just picked up a 63 which is in good shape, body wise. There is a single coat of what appears to be red primer over the original black paint. The primer has flaked off in several spots( mostly about the size of a quarter). I intend to sand off the primer but leave as much of the paint on as possible. What kind of paint did Ford use in 63 and what would the best primer sealer to use for this vintage ?
Thanks in advance
Greg
Paint wise, I am guessing Laquer I could be wrong though, but if you say theres red primer get that off for sure. Umm as for sealing this it would be just like if you were seal a car today. Your chice for sealer it either be PPG or Duponts etc etc etc.
If the paint is laquer base you will want to get it to bare sheet metal because the new Urethane bases and so on will not stick to the old style laquer primers/coats.
For taking the red oxide off maybe you can do it by hand and a scuff pad. but I havent had to do what you plan on doing so i guess its trial and error for paint removal.
