ok so i got my truck, which i tohught was a 1965 f250, but now im not so sure, it has a 352, 4 on the floor, 8 foot bed, custom cab emblams on the door, on the fenders the emblems say f250 twin i beam, but the interior, all the pics i have seen are regular gauges, mine are sweep gauges, so the speedo is a rectangle and the needle goes to the right, straight across, not around, any help lettin me know whats goin on would be appreciated
Post the VIN, and one of us will decode it for you. If you have Twin I-Beams and/or a 352, then yes, it is a '65 or a '66.
The sweep gauge you describe is the Custom Cab one, so there is no discrepancy there.
Banjopicker66 is on the money; and it should have a 65 grille if its a 65; posting the data plate info is the key, it will should the right year via serial date. But Customcab was not a vin data code or letter, I believe you'll only get model, engine, tran, axle & paint option's from vin, not Customcab apparell.
Mitch: I must respectfully disagree with you. The body code, which will usually be 81A or 81B, indicates whether it is a Custom Cab or not.
81A is plain, 81B is Custom Cab.
Now, the body code and the trim are often mixed up, so that appearances are deceiving. The differences between the two were not that distinct, as far as I can tell.
For example, an 81A might have a sweep speedometer and the CC trim down the side, - but is still isn't a Custom Cab. Those may have been special ordered.
81B might be plain appearing, but it is a Custom Cab nonetheless.
John, Let's be careful that we don't get into information overload, splitting hairs that are too fine to see. I do appreaciate the effort, but am left to wonder what the heck are we going to do with the info, that is boarderline useless. IMHO
John, John, John: Now I have to take a little bit of issue with your comment. It is exactly those little details which help clarify big questions. I love you like a brother, and I wil do anything I can for you, but I gotta beg to differ on this one!
In a sense both posiitons are correct, so lets not confuse the forum even more by argueing about it
CC trucks came in a myriad of flavors and you cannot tell from the vin EXACTLY what all was on you truck. You can tell that it was potentially ordered with some CC features, or at least a custom ordered truck, based on the VIN.
I think we DO need to make that clear to new users, who may have heard all sorts of false information about what make a CC truck. Reality is -- there is no single feature that identifies a CC (thought the exterior trim seems to be usually present, right?).
I would like to thank John (Banjopicker66); for refreshing my mine on the Body trim codes; I just got back that day from a house fire and was not thinking 100% on the first post I reply too. And yes the trucks body data plate will state the body trim level by either a 81A (Standard cab) or 81B (Customcab) for 61-66 models. The letter code will determine the two styles.
Thanks for covering my back John; and I guess as John (Jowilker) read and understand me better sometimes more than myself, He clarified my comment on the numerous way's customcab emblems where attched.
The chromed plastic bezel with the rectangular speedo head was standard on the 1965-66 Rangers. This dash bezel is similar in appearance to the one used on 1965 Falcons. I've seen this dash bezel on CC's and plain janes, too.
All CC's will have chrome grilles and windshield reveal mouldings, but not all CC's have side mouldings, or chrome front bumpers. While Rangers came with a chrome rear bumpers (delete optional), all types of rear bumpers on other models were optional at extra cost.
Fey was the main supplier of optional rear step bumpers on the west coast.
