I am trying to remove the stock radio CD6 unit from our 2001 Excursion. I have read about and been trying to use 4 finish nails inserted into the 4 holes on the faceplate. I am using approx 2 1/2" nails that I inserted probably 1 1/2". They feel like they are firmly seated and I would think have pushed open the retaining clips. However, when I try to remove the radio by pulling outward on the nails, it won't come. It will wiggle vertically probably 1/8" but won't pull out. As I pull hard enough the nails pull back out of the clips eventually with a good amount of force required.
I also thought that if I removed the drink holder I could reach behind and help push from behind but after removing the 2 screws on the dash surface it doesn't appear that I am anywheres near being able to remove it.
The tool that fits into the radio holes is pushed outward to release the clips, just pushing in the tool won't do it. I don't know if you can do this with the nails as you also have to pull out after you push to the side.
Some times the clips don't like to come undone using the tools or nails as you are and you have to take the whole dash apart to get at them from behind.
Put the key in the on position, push in the parking brake, shift into 1st gear, tilt the steering wheel all the way down. Start on the drivers side by the door and start pulling the main dash panel out. Move across toward the passenger side of the truck. It takes a little force but the dash will pull straight off. once you have the dash pulled loose, look behind it and disconnect the various wires for the headlights, ESOF, Airbag, and power point if equipped. You should then be able to pull the dash out far enough to get at the radio connections and undo them. Then you can pull the dash out and release the clips from behind to get the radio out.
Also, just so you know there are three more bolts holding the cup holder in that you have to access from behind the ash tray. I don't know if removing either will really help you with the radio though.
