Hi,
I have a 1996 F250 4x4 with an E4OD transmission. Recently, the speedometer stopped working and the OD light started to blink. According to some posts that I read at several forums, this usually occurs when the ABS speed sensor fails. Even though the ABS light didn't come on, I replaced the ABS speed sensor (located on the differential). This hasn't fixed the problem. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this problem? The transmission was recently rebuilt (less than 11k miles) and the torque converter was replaced at that time. I have checked all the fuses (all ok). I also scanned the computer with an OBD II scanner, but it didn't turn up any codes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Check your fuses again. My dads truck did this, check and see if the dome lights work in your truck. The speed sensor is on the same circut as the domes..and a few other acc.
Thanks for your replies - I rechecked all of the fuses and made sure that all of the connections in the fuse boxes have voltage. Everything seems to be OK, but still no speedometer. Based on what I read, there seems to be some diagreement about the location of the speed sensor that is used for the speedometer. I was told that the 96 model used the ABS sensor for all speed functions (speedometer, ABS brakes and cruise control). Does anyone know if this is the case? I can't seem to find anything on the transmission that resembles a speed sensor. If it is on the tranny, where is it located? Is there anything else that I should be looking at.
I recheck my truck's computer with my OBD II scanner (autoxray 4000). It now indicates that there is a malfunction code but I am unable to read the code. The scanner seems to have trouble with this truck's computer. It can't read real-time data from the engine, and when I run a code scan, it kills the engine half way through the process. Does anyone know if this particular scanner is capable of reading transmission/speedometer error codes?
You need to check the codes with the key on but the truck not running. So turn the key on with the computer plugged in and read the codes, My wait to start light comes on and off a couple of times then the codes are displayed if any
If you have cruise control, check the connection at the master cylinder. I added cruise to my '96 using what I learned on here, using a paper clip at that plug. To make a long story short the paper clip was not a good connection and it it did all kinds of crazy stuff. That circuit for the cruise and speed sensor are all tied together. I learned the EXPENSIVE WAY. The dealer put on a new speed sensor, transmission, PCM, and IDM. I finally fixed it myself by removing the cruise and paperclip.
The 96 speed sensor is on the rear axle. Replace it and check the wires from the sensor going forward. For some reason on the 96 they were prone to short out.
