I believe that No Limit Engineering has a kit for the 56 tilt hood. Most of these set ups are based on the set up from the mid 80's BMW hood tilt hinge so if you are handy you might adapt the hinge from one of these.

sorry, I did the whole front flip... there have been some articles in both the magazines on this install check the index on the tech article page and you can find them... if you can't find copies, I probably have them and I'd copy for you. Also if you're going to the Supernationals there will be about a gazillion there with tilt hoods and you could get all the advice and parts you need you going ???

I'm not yet at the point of putting the tilt hood on my '56, but the kit is available from Sacramento Vintage Ford. They actually have two kits. Mike Chesser in Georgia sells one also. Mid 50's probably sells something also.

When I do mine, I want the BMW style that uses the existing hood latch (which I may modify for an inside hood release) and then the hood tilts forward.

56 Tilt Hood

I have friend near #####. Louis that makes one of the slickest reverse opening hood tilt kits. His uses alot of the factory holes and the stock hood latch. He usually has them with him at the Supernationals. Email me at trukfarm@frontiernet,net with your phone number and i will relay them to him. I need an excuse to call and chat with him anyway.

56 Tilt Hood

I have a tilt kit on my 55 from No Limit. This was several years ago and some of the kits have changed. I can share some of the things I have learned.

Get a kit with stainless pieces for the hood support and the supports that the hood rollers slide into when the hood is shut. I ended up chroming mine at a significant, for the size, price. I believe no limits version of the kit has some strange looking supports that I have seen and don't personally like. Also get a kit with the short support rod. I have the long support rod and it keeps putting a tattoo on my forehead if I don't pay attention. The short one I have seen on a lot of trucks out here. It stays out of the way and makes looking and working on the engine much easier.

Other than that, the kit is great. Has enough adjustments so you can really get your hood to line up. Closes and opens easily. Have had the hood try and blow up from the back. The rear supports are what holds the hood down. But it only came up a half inch and then whent right back down. Never happened
again.

56 Tilt Hood

I got for my panel a "Y2K" kit from Mid 50s, made I believe my No-Limit. This kit was new last Spring, and is a 2nd generation tilter.

Most kits have rollers and a track, for the hood to slide fwd before you tilt it upwards. The 1st generation kits have the rollers on the hood I believe, with the tracking pieces (looks kind of like a drunk coat hanger) mounted just inside the front fenders, to the rear of the compartment.

The 2nd generation kit is much cleaner, better adjusting, has a short hood prop, out of the way, and, in this kit, the rollers mount on the hood, bolting into the original hinge attachment points, but the track mounts in the body holes for the hood hinge. This is a noticable improvement.

Also, I mounted (with plastic coated wire) a "safety" wire, so that if someone opens the hood and just pushes it all the way forward, it won't smack on the grill. Since the hood opens real wide, past the balance point, wanting to go forward, this extra safety wire means I really never need to use the original hood prop for a quick look at the engine. Of course, the hood prop will keep the hood from being blown or pushed back closed, so you should use it if you are around a crowd, etc.
