Unfortunatey it is , but that's OK...It came on the late '90s 5.0 powered Ford Explorer.

They're all over E-bay just look. I'm friends with some pony car guys and they said that this is the most common upgrade for Mustang GT owners. So people are always looking to get rid of these things

are the gt40 heads on the explorer cast iron or aluminum?also what is the hp and torque for the 5.0 explorer? i think the 95 mustang was rated at 235 hp and 350 lb/ft of torque witout gt40 heads and intake.

The explorer heads are cast iron. 96 used the regular GT40 heads while the 97-up used the GT40p heads with revised plug angles, requiring special headers. From what I've found, it looks like the explorer made 210-215 horse and 288 ft-lbs, give or take. I've read that a stock HO mustang cam will wake up an explorer engine, but I don't have any way of knowing if that is true or not...

I'm not looking for new heads & innerds just intake mani. do you think you would get the same power out of just the mani upgrade?

I'm sure the cam would make the biggest difference, but the intake manifold should give a bump by itself. I have no idea how much of an increase it power it would be, though.

Thumbs up

i know a cam makes a big difference but, the explorer makes less hp and tq with way better flowing heads and intake, than a stock 5.0HO?. They say dont build a truck motor like a mustang but when the mustang has more hp and tq the already additional tq should make up the difference for the higher hp and tq curve? am i making any sense? there is alot more to building or just bolting parts than just slapping a engine together. i really appreciate all the feedback, u guys and this site rocks!

Seems like motors are something you slap together to see if they work.

There is a science, but if you took all the best parts and put it together, that dosn't mean you will get the best results.
Its all math at that point.

Cam will give you a big wake up.
A restrictive intake will screw you up too.

Looks like everyone is saying 96-2001 explorer intake for the 87-96?
Am i getting this right?

They say dont bulid a truck like a mustang because the power bands are different.
The parts you use will determine when you have power. Mustang is high end power, trucks are low end power.
Fast - high end.
power - low end.

am i getting any of this right?
This sounds viable upgrade for me to switch intake, Want to make sure Im following everyone correctly here so I aquire the correct intake.

from what i have gathered, the gt40 intake of the explorer is a great upgrade that (around 100 at junk yard) is cheaper than a new intake that is the same. i am going to start looking for myself!

I got a cam already and am kinda leary about doing this change to my truck because it's my daily driver. Plus with a new engine I really don't want to screw it up. Do you need any adapter plates (throttle, computer... anything?) or dose this just bolt right in place of the old unit.
