I test drove the truck I have been looking at. It is a '99 5.4 4x4 ex-cab with 160K. There are a couple of concerns. The first is on the highway, when you coast, there is a vibration from about 70 down to 60 MPH. It is not a noise but more of a vibration that can be felt. The second concern is a kind of faint high pitched tinney noise mainly from the passenger side engine. It seems like it is from the engine itself and not a typical heat shield rattle. It is very faint but there. Any thoughts or input greatly appreciated. Thanks.
The vibration could be a U-joint. That's what I'd look at first.
Can you tell where the noise is coming from on the engine? If it's at the front I'd look at the belt and tensioner and idler pulleys to start.
for the vibration i would check lower ball joints and then steering idler arm for looseness. you need to have the tires off the ground and A frame ssetting on jacks to do a correct test.
Could also be tires, are they worn? Mine had the same vibration at about the same speed, new tires on now and vibration is gone.
The high pitched noise could be many things, does it do it during idle? or when the truck is under load? Check power steering pump, eventually all Ford trucks will have a problem with it.
