Oh yeah, worked great. Cut you two pieces about 8" long and bend them into a U. Slip them in the four holes. You'll fill them sliding under the retainer clips. You might have to push pretty hard. Then pry the U's out, to spread the clips that hold the radio in and work the radio out.
Coat hangers dont ALWAYS work - Ive had to butcher several radios after a customer tried the DIY coat hanger method. The release clips usually get bent out of whack from the hangers - then even the proper removal tool wont work.
Be happy you have one of the older models. I put a new radio in my 07 F-250. Look for the four holes, what holes.
You have to:
#1 Pull out the dash face plate. (Only to find that there is not enough clearance to remove or re-install radio.)
#2 Disconnect 10 electrical connections.
#3 Remove the front completely. (But wait clearance problems again. Now you have to remove the drivers side grab handle.)
Fords better idea.
Oh, by the way. If you need to remove the grab handle pull the piller cover off with it after removing the four bolts. The handle is screwed from behind onto the piller cover.
I'm sure strange things have happened. But, It would be tough to mess up the clips holding the original radio. They are stamped out of sheet metal and are very very strong. I wouldn't hesitate in doing it yourself. Go to a good radio shop and get the pigtails to go from the original equipment to the new stereo. Super clean installation.
As far as disassembling everything. I was worried about that when mine didn't want to budge on the first try. Luckily I didn't have to do that.
