Can oil flow thur the High pressure oil pump when the engine is not running, thur the high pressure rail back to the oil pan. Thanks John
No it cannot.
The rail is check-valved and cannot leak back; the pump reservoir and pump plumbing is also sealed so that motion has stopped, it has nowhere to drain back to.
Is there a reason you ask this? Truck taking longer periods of time to crank, ect?
NO the engine is running great. I was thinking that I running fresh oil thur my Luber and Flash out the the Qt of oil still in the engine. The only problem with my truck is the front end 60 K and need four new balljoints. I vented over in the Super Duty forum,
no. the high pressure oil system is a closed system. It is designed not to bleed down with the engine off. the injectors hold the oil on one end and the pump has a control solenoid on the other end that holds the oil on the other end. the system is like holding your thumb on top of a straw. the liquid in the straw will stay in the straw even if you pull the straw out of the glass of water. the high pressure oil system would only leak if there was a problem. A typical symptom would be a long crank time.

Without removing the oil cooler and installing a fitting to do so, there is no way to pump into or out of the system. Even if you did that, it would still never get to the oil that was in the upper end of the rails.

Well, he could always stud the heads. At least he'd get it all cleaned out while it's apart. Only problem is, it takes a bit longer than the usual oil change.
