I mount my Starmate with velcro on the dash area below the headlight switch. It is very easy to access the buttons and the light from the unit is not right in your eyes at night. The wires can easily fit into the seams between the upper and lower dash sections.
I tried a couple of different locations and this has worked the best for me.
You could also use the supplied backplate, permenantly mount the plate and then just remove the receiver when you are concerned about theft.
mines mounted between the fan speed and the 2x4/4x4 switch. the satilight radio came with a swivle mount with a sticky layer on one side. though it kind of blocks a few bottons on the radio, but not bad. and then have the wires tucked away between the to plastick halves in the dash.

Thanks guys....looking at several of your ideas...for right now, I'm going to try the "above the mirror" thing and see how annoying the light is that it emmits. This is a bigger unit than most of you have. It's the "Sportster" model with remote.
i took out the trash bag holder thing under the cup holder, and made a metal plate to bolt in its place, and mounted the XM to that, so the reciever sits right under the cup holder, its nice at night to just open the cup holder and magically not more blinding light... (another million dollar idea)
Well, I don't want to be a turd but don't bring that to Tennessee. There is a stout ticket for that here. Matter of fact all of the devices I have listed above are illegal where they can be viewed by the driver in the front seat.
There is a good reason for that. Of course law enforcement and government officials/utility workers are exempt while performing official duties.
Safety is no accident. Just worked a rearender today with a knucklehead who was playing with his new IPOD????
of course at work I have a 14" color monitor on our MDC's (I'm EMS)
Well, you're on top of it then, I guess. At least you know. And yes, EMS falls into the category.
Food for thought, the unit does not need to be on. It is illegal for those devices to just be installed where they can be viewed by the driver. The Nissan dealer here about crapped his pants when I showed him the law on items he was selling off the showroom.
I thought they couldn't be in view of the driver "while the vehicle was in motion" . IE hooked to a neutral safety so that it would only play in park .. (mines not that way but that's what I thought I'd read elsewhere)
