Thanks to Dustin and Wizzard for your reply to my query yesterday. Now that I know what to put in, can someone tell me HOW to put it in? It's a '73 Ford 2wd 3300 limited slip-no drain plug. Does this sound right: With axle level and warmed up, stick a hose in the fill hole and pump out all the old fluid that will come out and refill with new. Is that it or do I need to tilt axle to one side after to drain into empty diff. then do other side (am thinking off the top of my old half empty head) or any other extra stuff? Any help is much appreciated.
There is no drain hole. Best way is to pull the cover off, put silicone sealer on the edges of the cover and re-bolt it back to the rear endafter all the grease has drained. To refill there is a fill plug on the top half of the rear end that you take out and fill the rear end till grease comes out. The fill plug can be taken out with a ratchet wrench. Tim
If your rear axle is a Ford 9" there is no rear cover to remove only thing you can remove is the third member (Differential Carrier) and you need to pull the axles before you can do that. So if it is not leaking I would just pump out the old oil and pour in the new oil. I just replaced all the seals, gaskets, and wheel bearings in my 77 Ford 9" during my frame off restoration of my 77 F150. I will be putting the rear axle back under the truck (frame actually) tomorrow. Here's a link to some photos of my finished axle ready to be installed tomorrow:
