My little brother has a 95 F150 extended cab 4X4 with the 5.8L. Last week we put a new set of Pace Setter shorty headers on the truck. The install went real smooth. When we were putting it back together we bypassed the air pump and did not reinstall it. We also cleaned out the cats due to the fact they were starting to make noise. Before the work the truck ran just perfect. After the headers and stuff though the truck shifts harder than you could even imagine. It will actually throw you around in the truck when it goes to shift. Does anyone have any ideas as to what to look for to find the reason for this issue? My local trans shop is of no help.
putting a set of headers should not make your trans go in to limp mode keep an eye on your O/D light on you shifter and if it does it again it will blink to give a code for trouble.
tfx4c about 2 months ago i installed a new exhaust system on my 95 F150. the cats accidently fell off when we installed the new system. i put on flowmasters. i did not remove the air pump. also switched to royal purple tranny fluid. its been nothing but smooth shifting since. my truck did shift hard but not to the point that it threw me in the cab. maybe the pump needs to go back on if the headers are not in the way. good luck fanblade///////////////////////////
At work we have a 94 F350 with the 460 in it and the automatic. It started shifting really hard. The whole truck would shake and rattle when shifting. We took it to a tranny shop, and they could not find a problem diagnostically, but the mechanic tried something that has worked for him before. He disconnected the battery, and reconnected it after waiting ten minutes. It worked, the truck drove normally for months, and it started shifting hard again. I did the battery trick and it worked again. The mechanic said sometimes the computer just has a brainfart and causes it to shift at the wrong point in the rpm range. I have no idea if that is true, but rebootong seems to fix issues with other computer controlled devices, so why not.
The extremely hard shifting you are describing sounds like the speed sensor is disconnected or inop. Check for wires you may have pulled loose or burned. I believe on that truck the VSS is in the rear end.
