how to test a idm

can someone tell me how to check the idm to see if it is bad and also check the wiring harness i get horrible fuel milage about 10 mpg and hard starting and low power it is a early 99 f-350 7.3

You can ohm out the harness and injectors from the IDM connector. PM me your email address and i'll send you the pinout.

Hears a dumb question that i should know by now- Is the IDM built into the PCM? If not were is it located? Is it another name for the PCM?

IDM provides 115vdc to the injectors so Ford wisely moved it out of the PCM. If you remove the driver side wheel well liner and look up to the right it is on the inner fender.
PCM Tells IDM to fire at 12vdc and IDM sends 115vdc to the injectors
