cleaning a motor

well its pretty simple the engine compartment and engin are coveres in 13 years worth of grease and grime but a feller i know said that the motors cant be washed off because of something called a (valley pan)?? which he said will drain water off thhe engine and back down into the oil other than screwing up my already faulty wiring harness can the engine be cleaned?

If the drain plug/hold down in the valley pan is installed just back of the intake there will be no problem washing a cold engine.

The VP hold down is a screw in plug with a square hole, the drain is the square hole, it drains back onto the rear of the engine block and down the sides of the bell housing. Some times during reassembly some members have forgotten to re install this item.....not a good idea.

7.3 idi bandit,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Notice he said cold engine, spraying cold water on a hot injection pump will damage it.
Steel parts inside an aluminum case and close tolerances spell trouble with sudden temperature changes to the colder side.

You will have little problem just stay clear of the PCM connector under the booster next to the fender.....

You can always open any connectors and blow them dry....possibly apply some dielectric grease before closing back up.
