New to 4WD

I recently got a 1999 F250 4WD. No manual. To lock it into 4WD do I turn the hub clockwise or counter cloackwise?

Thanks

Actually should be written on the hub, but they're plastic, so it is possible, I guess, that it wore off. IIRC, clockwise locks.
Since you're new at it, don't leave it engaged on dry pavement. It needs a little slip to work right. If you leave it locked it'll chatter something terrible.
Disengaging, you unlock, and then quickest is you reverse about 10 feet and it will disengage so you're not burning fuel spinning that pumpkin for no reason.
I love having 4x. Its not used a lot, but its a lifesaver every time I need it. My dad wasn't a believer. I loved a saying he had. The difference between 2 and 4 wheel drive is 4 gets you stuck 70 feet later.

TwelveAlpham, we must be related because that is the same saying my dad also has, over the years he has yet to have a 4 wheel drive truck. It isn't totally true because my 4x4 has gotten me to and from hunting spots, and even from my house out to the hwy in snow storms where 2wd would have been stuck before I even started. I have owned a 2wd truck or two and a can say without a doubt they aren't worth a hoot without 800lb of ballest in the box and even then they're pretty marginal.

oldpaintguy, is your truck equiped with ESOF or manual shift??? this will make a difference. If it's a manual shift, then just do as was stated above. If you have the ESOF then the hubs will either be in auto or lock. either or will work but the lock function is more of an override/****happens for if you lose vacume to the hubs and they wont automatically engage! as state above clockwise will be lock and counter clockwise will be auto!

Welcome to FTE lots of good info and people around here

Looks like the other guys have you covered on the 4WD issue. If you want the manuals for your truck, go to the Motorcraft website

http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdi...ageid=&gutsid=

Click on "Owner Guides" left hand column then select your year and model and you will be able to download PDF files of all the manuals to your computer. There is no cost for these manuals

Hope this helps

You can leave your hubs locked all winter long and not hurt a thing. You will not have the "chatter" unless the T-case is locked in. Drive away... You can go as fast as you want in 4X4 and not hurt anything too...
