V10 needs help

I traded in my 2000 7.3 PSD X 6in Fabtech lift with 35in BFG mudterrain 3.73 posi and Superchip tuner, for a 2005 V10 X with 8in Fabtech and 37in Pro Comp all terrains also with the 3.73 axle. It is a beautiful rig. But I miss the power of the PSD. I thought the V10 would have a little more umph than it does. What have you V10 guys done to get more power? I have been looking at superchargers and turbos, the X is stock and I know it needs to breath, Do you guys have recomendations on what to buy. Which chips, air filters, exhaust work best. I dont tow to much only a 4 quad trailer. Thanks for the help

Change it off to 4.30 or 4.56 ratio gearing front and rear. The power you want will be there. Modding the engine to get more power will help, but the stock 3.73 ratio for the v-10 is made for fuel economy, not power. The large tires only makes this worse. Ford has already gotten most of the power out of this engine.

Changing the ratio's is cheaper than a supercharger.
The powertrain will have far less strain than it does now with the large tires.

The v-10 revs high, and the extra rpm of the higher ratio's will not hurt it. It workes better.

With the 3.73 ratio, your effective ratio with 37" tires will be 3.19
With the 4.30 ratio, your effective ratio with 37" tires will be 3.67
With the 4.56 ratio, your effective ratio with 37" tires will be 3.9
With the 4.88 ratio, your effective ratio with 37" tires will be 4.17
With the 5.13 ratio, your effective ratio with 37" tires will be 4.39

With the 37" tires, the 4.56 ratio is the closest to giving you the effective factory 3.73 towing ratio.

With the 37" tires, the 5.13 ratio is the closest to giving you the effective factory 4.30 towing ratio.

The diesel Excursions were only offered with the 3.73 ratio. The diesel engine had sufficient extra torque to make lower gearing unnessesary. Their maximum tow is listed at 11000lbs (2003- 2005)

The V-10's were offered with the 3.73 ratio, which limited them to a maximum tow rating of 9600lbs. The optional 4.30 ratio raises this to 11000lbs. (2003-2005)

Info from the Ford Towing Guide and Ford Source Books.

Thumbs up

I Added A Gibson Exhaust System And A K&n Fipk To My 2005 Ex V10 And It Did Make A Difference. I Used The Same Set Up On My 2001 Ex V10. At The Time I Was Towing A 9000lb Travel Trailer Up The Pa Turnpike At 75-80mph. These Performance Options Are Pretty Reasonable And Will Not Brake The Bank.

also remember with the V10's you want to let them rev! most V10's have a sweet spot of 2-2300 rpm's! getting your V10's rpm's low at crusing isn't what you want to do!

especialy with an X, you have the added weight of the rear compartment to add to your "dead weight", along with the added weight of bigger tires too! if you do the calculations on the computer, you might want to think about a step or 2 higher (lower #'d gears)than what is recomended!

according to this web site ( http://www.accuautoparts.com/ ) you'd need to look into a set of 4.56's to run a 37" tire and bring your rpm's back to stock (or slightly over), 5.13's would put you close or right at your power zone 18-1900 @ 60mph! now if you want a good comprimise between 4.56s and 5.13's you could go with some 4.88's, which wouldn't be to harsh on your top end for road travel, and would still give you more low end grunt for pulling!

and something else to think about is IF some time in the future you'll be increasing your tire size. then for sure the 5.13's, that will cover you up to about a 38-39!

is the addition of a cold air intake worthwhile on V10? Seeks I read where it did not do anything over the stock air filter set up.
What about the hypertech?
