Which Intercooler

It's been a while.....but is the 6.0 Intercooler still considered the "best bang for the buck." I've noticed there has been some posts on a speerco? intercooler. Looked like the 6.0 was the only one in my budget anyway.

Spearco>6.0 intercooler, but spearco is MUCH higher in price, which makes the 6.0 the best bang for the buck.

I was thinking $150 to $200 for 6.0 IC and parts. How much for speerco?

First off, the Spearco is an awesome IC. I am 100% pleased with mine - I've got the 7.3 Spearco. Build quality is good, fit was perfect, turbo spools up quicker, and the EGT reduction is great.

yamaguy, a stock 6.0 IC will lower your EGT's about 100* +/- mainly while towing or hauling a load. Other than that, it doesn't offer much of an advantage over the stock 7.3 IC. I had a stock 6.0 IC for a while, and didn't notice the turbo spooling any differently, or a change in EGT when empty.

So, If I'm mainly interested in towing.....the 6.0 IC would be a good choice? I just bought a trailer with a GTWR=18,500#. This is quite a step up from the trailer I was towing. I'm not really interested in the turbo spool, just the reduction in EGT.

schmity, if your going to tow even close to that trailers weight rating you need to really think about a Spearco or a DIIC (Diesel Innovations intercooler). My TT is 9K and I can sling it around all day long in the 80 tow setting without EGT issues. I paid $1200 for the 7.3 Spearco and it is worth every penny!!

Do you guys think the DI cooler is comprable to the Spearco? I notice the DI claims to cool air to near ambient temps. Is the Spearco doing the same?

Edit: And, does BD make the SPEARCO cooler? When I read the question it seems stupid but it seems I saw that somewhere.

I do not think you will go wrong with either, there are heated discussions compairing the two and neither side is giving in. The Spearco seemed to be the best choice for me at the time, I would get the one that gives you the best deal. I know Jeremy and I are very happy with our Spearco CACs!

If I'm not mistaken, Spearco is made by Turbonetics. But don't hold me to that, I did buy it from Brian at blackwidowdiesel.

This is my opinion, but I think the Spearco is a better unit than the DI. From what I've seen, both in person and in pictures, the build quality and weld quality of the Spearco seem a little cleaner.

Yes, the Spearco is cooling to near ambient temps. But, that's pretty subjective. When you're pre IC air temps are over 400 degrees, what do you consider "near ambient" temps? Within 10 degrees....within 50 degrees....see what I'm saying?

I do know this about the Spearco - I did some post IC air temp checks using the AE software, and the temps were 95-100 degrees, and I believe it was somewhere between 70-90 degrees outside. I have a thread on it somewhere.

The Spearco is made by Turbonetics, like Rampage said. They have many distributors, but only one mfgr. DI has theirs welded at Hellman Performance, not in house at DI. You can get the same DI IC from Hellman.

Thanks for sharing your input guys. Man, I was just saying to myself, "I'll get the ATS shroud and be done for a while". Oh boy...

To add to Jeremy's comments about the Spearco Intercooler: It's a damn shame to hide such a beautiful piece of artwork behind the grill, AC condensor and the tranny cooler!!!!!!!!!!

I noticed that Black Widow has a 7.3L Spearco intercooler and a 6.0L Spearco intercooler retrofit for the 7.3L? Both the same price.....Whats the difference and which do you choose? (reference = https://www.shop.blackwidowdiesel.co...?categoryId=35)

6.0 intercooler is the absoluter maximum intercooler space you can fit in there, and its designed for the 6.0 trucks. more power=more heat, and a 7.3 version is fine for most guys out there. If i were to get a spearco i'd get a 6.0 just because it looks cooler.
