i asked about this in the bronco forum but i will prolly get more answers here.
i went wheeling over this last week and got hung up on some rocks and managed to dent the lowest part of the transmission pan. there is no leaking and everything seems to be working fine.
my questions are whats in the transmission where that part of the pan dips down ? is the magnet there ? some type of fluid pick up tube ? filter?
i plan on replacing the pan but im wondering if i should drive the truck till i do.like i said, its not a huge dent and its not leaking,i just want to be safe.
There is a pick up tube in that area.
If you bonked it real good you could push it up into the valve body and cause some damage.
would that be aparent by poor running ?
the dent is maybe 1/4 to 1/2 deep. is the bottem of that paticular part flat or does it have a molded dip in it ?
sorry to ask stupid questions. ive looked at it a number of times in the past and you think i could tell ya what it looked like before.
ill try to get out today and take a pic.
I am assuming this is the 4x4 version of the pan with the small sump. This is where the filter has an extension tube about about 2 " long. I would imagine the worse thing that happened to you, in your instance, is that the extension tube got broken i think there is a magnet right there too. Memory is not as good as it once was. Once you drop the pan, it will be all clear to you. I would fix it as soon as you can.
Well, you should say "Thanks" to Ford engineers, they designed this 4X4 oil pan with deeper shape since it can be hit by rocks, just as you did...
Don't worry to much, looks as not internal dammage, just repair/replace Oil Pan and perform a general tranny oil and filter change and give a very close look to internal bodies, just in case...
