I don't like what I'm reading on this topic. I mounted a set of 18" '07 Edge Wheels and ContiTrac Tires on my '03 Edge last week. Haven't had a problem yet (just rain so far), I was hoping they would be OK in the snow.

They came on my wife's 05 Escape. They did alright until about the 15-18,000 mark - basically when they were about half worn. After that, I didn't trust them on dry pavement, much less rain or snow. Replaced them with Michelin Cross Terrains and the stock wheels off my 2007 Ranger. Most everyone on the Escape forums are getting rid of them as soon as they can.
I personally would not use them. There are too many others out there that are a lot better. Tires for me are something I don't skim on just because you can get a steal on a set. Think of how much money (your vehicle) and valuables (such as you and your family) are riding on them. I would rather put a little more into a great set that I trust. Even though anything can happen to any set and I don't have a problem finding screws and nails in the road, I don't need any help from a bad set... lol....
I don't drive off road besides an easy dirt road here and there, and I could care less about a "smooth" ride, handling is much more important. I got some Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s for my 95 2wd longbed Ranger and it seems to be pretty good for traction. Sidewalls are a little soft in hard cornering, but much better than the stock tires. Cheap at $75 each installed and seem to last a long time ~40k. These are new Bridgestone technology, so don't worry about the old problems with pre-Bridgestone Firestones.
I've had three sets of Continental's ContiTrac on three vehicles. My 00 F150 which came with stock and got 65ish out of them. The tread came off of part of one I think I hit something otherwise I would of got 75k out of them. On our 04 Escape which came with them from the factory has 50k and still quite a bit of thread left. Probably see 75k but they're a bit noisey on certain payment types. My Ranger which has 11k so to soon to tell.
I rotate mine every 5-7.5k which probably extends the life quite a bit. I got over 65k on a set of stock Tiger paws on a 98 Escort once, no one seems to believe that. So keep that in mind. You can get a deal a Walmart and get it done every 7.5k fairly cheap.
Traction no complaints. In fact my Ranger is probably the best RWD 2wd vehicle i've ever driven in bad weather. The Escape does excellent as well. The F150 I can't remember but I would of replaced them if I had any problems.
My 06 Escape has them on it. In all the snow we've had here for the last month, they have done great. But this is an automatic 4X4 system the Escape has. They have had great traction.
My biggest problem with them is the noise. They thump so badly that you'd swear you had a flat or other problems. But I hear that if you keep them rotated that the noise is minimized.
I don't run them on my Ranger or F250 or any other truck here, and I won't put them back on the Escape when I do replace them.
