I'm getting ready to install a tranny temp gauage and was looking at a pillar pod - after seeing the prices, I've decided to go with a 3 gauage pod (only a few bucks difference from the 1 & 2). So I'll have 2 "holes" left for other gauages. What other gauages would every suggest.
My first thought is a h2o temp - but what else?
I tow a few times a year, so the tranny temp is a must.
I thinsk the ISSPRO gauges look cool b/c they look stock. (black face/white letters/green backlight) But the auto meters and others look awesome too! I though about doing this to my 2000 X 6.8 l too, but I never got around to it... Are you going with electrical or mechanical gauges? If you had a diesel, I would say boost and EGT, but you have the same dilemma I did with the V10, so a boost gauge or EGT would be kind of silly .
h2o temp sounds good
volt-meter maybe?
do you have rear airbags? If yes, maybe a air pressure gauge.
whatever you decide, good luck and take tons of pics!
Don't you already have a coolant temperature gauge in your dashboard? In fact, my '05 EB has an OEM transmission temperature gauge in the dashboard ... they took away the voltmeter that I used to have in my '01. How about a vacuum gauge for one hole? Watching one of those helps keep your foot lightly on the go-pedal ... more so than the overhead MPG lie-o-meter.
If you go with any electric guages you can ver easily use one guage for two spots. for example a single.temp guage could be put on the front and the rear diff all you need is 2 sending units and a 2 way switch. A water temp could also be an oil temp. If i had to decide i'd go with a water/oil temp a mechanical oil pressure a front rear diff guage and a trans temp if i towed much.
how does a Vacuum gauge help you to get better mileage? Obviously it doesn't actively help improve mileage, but what mileage-saving info can you glean from watching the gauge? Im a little confused .
CFICARE;
You can find posts on this site that show the stock tranny temp gauge is nothing more than an idiot light. The next time you start your Ex watch the tranny temp gauge and notice that it immediately goes to "Normal" temp. Really burns me up, pun intended!
Michael
I had just gotten my voltmeter for my undercubby pod. I had not instaled it yet. The Excursion died in an intersection.
The alternator had died and it was running on battery. The idiot light did not work until after the engine had died. Useless.
I wish I had alerady installed the voltmeter. It might well have saved me a screwed up morning waiting for a tow truck. I could have driven it to the dealer after noticing the charge going down and before the battery died.
Now, the dang thing is at the dealer until Wednesday, right during the time I wanted and was able to do some major mods.
Ford should have done something better than the crappy trans gauge and no voltmeter. Ahh, well.
You don't have a diesel so I'll leave those sugestions out........
As previously stated stock tranny temp gauge is worthless, just about the only thing it does is let you know the vehicle has a tranny!
Tans temp & Voltmeter are almost manditory in my opinion
and
if you use 4x4 a lot diff temp guage/guages would be nice
there is a company out there that makes aircraft style (2 in 1, side by side) but it probly wouldn't match the other gauges in looks--I like everything looking the same as I'm sure a lot of guys do.
if you mostly tow then only get a rear diff temp guage.
I have a psd so eventually I'll put a guage set in
Pillar--EGT, Boost, and voltmeter
Under dash(under that storgage bin) trans temp in the middle with front diff temp on the left and rear diff temp on the right.

As you press harder on the go-pedal, the vacuum level drops. Let off on the gas while coasting, and the vacuum shoots way up. The gauge merely allows you to visualize how agressive your right foot is behaving.

Then mine must be busted 'cause the needle gradually creeps up the gauge. In fact, it almost copies the movement of my engine coolant gauge.
Michael - Thanks for the link, but I'm happy with how my gauge is performing. It does not "jump up" to some pre-set level, but gradually climbs up from the "below scale" position on the gauge as one would expect, then settles around the mid-range level. I haven't towed my car trailer with this X yet, but I'm curious how it'll respond them. Then again, I doubt much change since my loaded trailer only weighs about 5,600#.
