Not to burst your bubble, but the local Sheriff's Dept here in Mid-Missouri recommended a very nice Security Video system with 24 hour recording VCR after we had a string of break-ins. Well, three weeks after the install we caught three people on video breaking into our video games and stealing quarters. We gave the video to the Sheriff's Dept who then asked if we knew the suspects. Of course, we didn't. If I had known them, I would have taken care of them myself. Since we didn't know them, they told us there was nothing they could do because they couldn't identify them. Since then, there were 14 other break-ins all by the same three people!! The Sheriff's couldn't do anything. Spent $1500 on the system and it didn't do anything.
You might try this course of action:
1) Take some of the stills from the video. Now post them in a local paper with an offer of reward for information. Use a blind mailbox drop for any correspondence. I'm betting you will get some information that way.
You can also take some measures to force the Sheriff's department to act but it then puts you on bad terms with the department.
Number one will get results.
Your newspaper might run the photos for free as part of an article.
I will look into the driveway alarm. I had my truck borken into 5 years ago and they got a case oc CD and left a DeWalt drill and RayBans!!
Too much court time if I tag a theif with my 45-70 Govt.
Doing a google search it seems that most are available on line...haven't found any yet that I could just go the the local box store and find one. The Dakota Alert 3000 that f-350 turbo posted looks pretty viable at the moment. Thanks!
Keith, I saw one of those remote video cam and monitor sets at Costco. I didn't check the price, but knowing Costco, it is probably a decent deal, and you can check it out on display. I would imagine that you can record with them too. That way, you know who to go gunnin for.
On edit: I don't know if either of these is the one I was looking at but see if you can use this link.
Gunslingr. My driveway alarm works excellent. A person walking up to my house will trigger an alarm in my house every time. You can adjust the sensitivity so a bird will trigger it if you wanted. Its not the old rubber hose type that a car has to drive over. It has a electronic beam and if its broken it will trip the alarm. I think its the best thing since sliced bread!
Stray dogs would be a problem where I live. I think I would get tired of chasing every alarm while trying to relax with a cold one at night.
I have found that one of the cheapest video cameras is a baby monitor set. It has B/W picture, infrared, and audio, and is wireless. You can usually plug it into your VCR or DVR. Other camera prices have also came down over the years, but one with night-vision is still usually $100 plus, where as a baby monitor at Wal-Mart is usually much cheaper.
in the State of Texas you can use up and including deadly force to prevent criminal mischief in the nite...plus dead ppl cant talk...haha..sorry to hear bout your stuff...kill'em all...
Man Keith sorry to hear about your truck and other items. Post like this make me happy I do live in a rural Alaska community. Heck I havent locked my house in the past 17 years. Of course I dont know were the key is anymore. My dog is pretty good about early warning, motion lights work pretty well for me also. Plus I have good neighbors around...
I do agree on getting a video system since it seems like an ongoing issue. Catch those dirty little SOB's on video then see the Police. A gun is nice but I just cant see killing someone over a piece of equipment. I do have a 12 Ga loaded with Slugs but its for bear protection more than anything.... Now maybe a tazzer gun were you can keep zapping them until you feel vented might be the key. Plus if you zap them enough they will **** their pants....ah dignity...
They are in the process of passing a new law here. Not only can you use deadly force to protect yourself and family, at any time, but the new law will allow you to use deadly force to help "Joe Blow" out if necessary.....
It's like I told the Feds and local police...on another matter...just last week...I have the will and the capacity to protect my family and property....with extreme prejudice.
Just got to remember the 7 magic words..."I was in fear for my life"
But if you can't see 'em....
Well, to remedy that I will be looking in a video surveillance system and drive way alert.
I think the drive way alert first. Then the video.
Thanks to all for the good wishes and suggestions.
Wednesday night (11pm),I was across the street talking with and getting my shotgun back from my brother-n-law. When i hear my garage door go up and someone going in.... So i creep over (knowing that my wife is in bed), and see two punks starting to stack up my tools onto my welder & cart. When that shotgun racked they about shat on themselves... One ran (he was caught by BIL's pitbull) the other one got a beating and duck taped to the power pole about 3 feet up and left for the cops to find (about an hour later).
I saw them walk by my place last week while working on my Jeep, looking.
