As you may be aware I had just gotten a new rebuilt 302 engine installed... however there is one issue im still trying to resolve:
When driving since getting new engine it doesnt seem to heat up much (the gauge doesnt go up at all at least and no warm air). Anyways it will say its cold then say maybe 5-10 minutes into driving it the gauge rockets up to the red zone, it will only stay there briefly then it goes back about midway in the normal zone. when its in the normal zone after that it blows out nice warm air, however, it seems to shoot back up to red zone 1 or 2 times more and when it reaches that zone the vents get stone cold as well until the gauge goes back into the normal zone...
It seems to do it a few times then it seems to back off as im driving it?
Could this maybe be perhaps a thermostat? I've checked fluids and they are OK.
Any thoughts is much appreciated, she's almost back to normal completely.
Sounds more like you have a couple of problems. Maybe a bad thermostat like you said and maybe some air pockets in the motor still working out. I would start with the easy stuff. Thermostat, water pump, hoses. etc. take it one piece at a time and you will probably find the trouble.
Sounds like air pockets. Give it some time. Or you could start it cold with the radiator cap off, and fill with coolant as you see the level drop (air working its way out of the system).
Ok heres the scoop... did all that was told but i noticed it seems to all be blowing out the overflow resevior...
Also the hose going from the top of the radiator to where ever, (the bid thick one that goes i think to water pump?) like flattens, like a vacuum sucked it completely flat.
One mechanic that usually works on my truck thinks that the water pump that was used (its new rebuilt i think) could be flowing in reverse. He said that the 302 for the mustang i think uses the same insides, but flows in reverse, and that the pump may have been rebuilt with the wrong inner componets.
My question is does this make sense that I may need to get a differnt water pump? And would this theory make that big radiator hose (i think its the return hose, its big) become like a vacuum and flatten, because its trying to suck rather than return fluid, and also cause the resevior to blow out radiator fluid.
That could make sense only because in older vehicles with v-belts the water pump is driven the reverse (clockwise) of what it is in serp. belt driven cars (counter clockwise)
worth checking out, Like your mechanic thinks it is possible the factory used the wrong parts, I am sure they look extremely similar.
Replaced radiator hoses, temp sensor, thermostat, and another new water pump. better...
Well now heres the new problem:
It will run fine all day, nice hot air, temp stable, engine off or on every few hours fine, no coolent leaks, nothing...
However, if this thing sits over night, and gets nice and cold i go to drive and im missing maybe 1/2 to 1 gallon of anti-freeze...
Im thinking I replaced everything else, its got to be the radiator? Is it possible the leaks are only opening up when the metal in the radiator cools, then it leaks out? Remember I've replaced almost every other componet, didn't see and leaks, runs fine all day... and new rebuild engine, and the engine isnt leaking or thorwing off white smoke... or theres no foam in the oil.
that much water is going somewhere and if leaking will be
seen. the only other place it can go is into the cylinders
gaskets, heads, or cylinders
get a pressure pump for your radiator and pump it up
Ok it's been confirmed that the coolant is all blowing out through the top of the resevior. usually about a gallon it did it first thing on the way to work today, as usual... Does this sound like somethings clogged up, even though after everythings running awhile it seems to hold the fluid fine when everythings hot...
I mean this thing apparently blows out fluid when engines been cold or somrthing... and I know its FOR SURE coming out the resevior
Glad you figured it out. Sucks it was such a pain to figure out. Vehicles and kids are good at deciding you have too much money and need to spend some of it on them.
