I have a 2004 F-150. It has the 4r70w transmission. It has recently started shifting firmly, kind of stiffly, at slow speeds but only once a day or so. It does not skip or have any other symptoms. I checked the transmission fluid level and it is a little high. When the truck was hot after being ran around town the level was about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above the 'hot' range in the dipstick.
I checked the fluid using a siphon bulb and it was still bright red and not burnt and it didn't seem foamy. I may try to siphon some more out later if the rain stops here. The dipstick has a 3/4 inch 'cold' area and a 3/4 inch 'hot' area and mine was 1/2 inch above that.
Do you think there could be any damage? Are the firm shifts caused by too much fluid? I may take it back to Ford to run it on the computer and see if it threw any codes but I don't have any check engine lights on. It is under warranty until September so I have time to spare getting it fixed. If removing fluid would help I would like to try that as a troubleshooting solution before any warranty work.
Your fluid level is OK. It's under warranty, so I would bring it in. It sounds like something is causing the line presssure to go high in the transmission, hence the hard upshifts. I had the 4R70W in my 96, and it developed a hard upshift from 1-2, every other gear was fine. Turned out it was a broken 1-2 acumulator spring
Happy Holidays
Rich
that trans has had rough shifting problems due to bad epc valves sticking,
take it back asap and let them fix it which means dropping the oil pan to get at the shift body solinodes and replaceing that valve/solinode.
then you will also have a partial fuild change and proper levels when filled back up.

They said they reprogrammed the computer with the most recent program. I hope it works or this truck is gone and a new one is coming home. I am not going to mess around with transmission troubles.
Another plain 2007 supercab or supercrew XLT. It drove fine tonight with no hard shifts or bumps. My warranty runs out in September so if it keeps acting up you can bet your butt I'll have a new one by September. Every time someone I have known had transmission issues they kept having them until the vehicle was gone. I just won't trust it if it was more than the computer having a glitch.
The local dealer does have a 2007 STX supercab 4x4 with power mirrors and windows in it. Hmmmm...... Swap my carpet and chrome for 4x4. Interesting idea.
