I have a 1971 Ford F-100, and I'd like to do some stuff to it to make it look meaner. I was recentley roaming around on Google, and found a picture of a truck very silimar to mine, but almost slammed to the ground. I'd like to do a suspension drop on my truck, I loved the way it looked. But I have some questions to ask before I get started.
I've gotten under the truck, and looked at the rear suspension after someone telling me that i could just simply "flip the leafs over for a lower ride hight." All I want is a 2 or so inch drop, just enough to make it look mean, but still be usable for hauling a boat and a trailer or something around without the back bumper dragging. I've also looked at my Chilton's manual, and it looks as though i could do that. To me, it seems a little iffy, so id like some feedback on what i should do, and if possible, an approxamate cost for a lowering kit of about 2 inches.
Alright. The only thing im worried about is the axle hitting the frame when i go over bumps. I really dont want to start having to cut and weaken the frame, but if i have to, i will. I really like my axle the way it is, haha.
yeah. i still want to use it for hauling. me and my dad have boats and trailers we do stufff with occasionaly. im also looking to get some stiffer leafs for the back if i decide to do the flip. but im gonna go look at the leafs, frame, and axle tomorrow with a tape measure. ive seen some pretty cool rodded trucks on here. but as for rods, im more with the 49 - 53 ford coupes.
I would go ahead and do the flip if you want, then add a pair of airbags for when you haul anything. keep about 10 lbs in the bags for nornal driving, then air them up as the load increases. It's the best way to have your cake and eat it too.
How hard is it to do airbags? i dont have much fabricating skill or welding skills what so ever.
i have the airlift brand HD bags on mine they were also in it when i purchased the truck. but you install the mounts add the bags and run the lines and bolt it all down whoever did it on mine ran the air lines so the valvestems exit out the lower license plate crew holes. kinda neat if you ask me i dunno where thy suggest doing it.
but they also make a incab control so you can add or remove air at the push of a button.
You can get 2" lowering shackels and another 2 inches with lowered hangers for the rear springs. A flip kit is a 5" drop and is severe! You will have less than 2" of travel before hitting the frame. With the shackle and hanger route you can go one change at a time until you get to your desired height.
The kit should run roughly $150 for hanger/shackles/bolts and shims. Pretty easy kit to install.

So that kit has everything even for the front? or is it just the back?
i also want to do the front, and i know LMC has drop springs for about 90 bucks. but if the kit has stuff for the front too, im gonna hold off on ordering from LMC.
