Diesel tech finally saw my 07 today after bringing it to the dealer three times for the oil leak.....aparantly he is booked up pretty bad...he said on the 06's and 07's they put a heavier assembly lube on the real main seal and when heated up it causes it to run down the back of the motor....said he cleaned it up and put some dye in the oil and to bring it back if it continues to leak......anyone heard of the heavy lube thing??? it sounds legit and makes sense...just wondering if im getting fooled...
Yep your tech did the right thing. Assemble lube can drip down onto the bell housing area. By putting dye in the motor your tech will be able to locate an engine oil leak if there is one. Drive it and enjoy it. Periodically check for a leak and if it comes back take it to your tech and he will check for a leak by tracing the dye in the oil.
Hmmm... all I'm gonna say is that there are two camps on this subject, one says if it doesn't drip/leave puddles, doesn't lose more than a quart or two between oil changes and starts up and runs ok, then maybe they'll get it looked at before the warranty expires because they really kind of expect it from a diesel. The other says that they paid way too much money for there to be any oil anywhere on the engine, it is a leak and it better get fixed before it has 10,000mi on it or they're going lemon law. They are both correct and both well within their rights, and you probably need to decide which side of the puddle you stand on, so to speak. Regardless of all that, if it drips or leaves puddles you definitely need to persue it and assembly lube for the most part won't drip or leave puddles. If it's just a wet spot on the bell housing assembly lube is a possibility.

Reason: left out line
Yep, mine is a $40,000 grease gun, it's been doing it for 3,889 miles now. They must have slathered it on by the pound, so much has come out it's a wonder there's any room for parts in that motor. So they say. I will say one thing, the "grease" does smell differently than the oil, put a sample on a paper towl of each and smelled them, one off the tranny and one off the dipstick. They did the same for me except only one bottle of dye was put in when there was supposed to be three, so of course it didn't show under the UV light (didn't even show on the dipstick, needs three bottles) so it's back I go when I have time. Who knows.
By adding the oil dye.... your diesel tech is doing the 100% right thing.
This will tell him where the oil is leaking or not leaking - no guessing.
I had it done and no leak was detected. There is a little plastic cap on the bell housing that my tech popped off and he just cleaned what he could see with a rag and put it back on.
Bottom line... no oil was detected and all is well.
Again... the dye will confirm if motor oil or not... and yes... excess assembly lube has been discussed as a known culprit over the years.
My truck I doing the same thing . Never leave a drop. I took it yesterday to my buddy that works at Ford . He cleaned it off and we added dye to it ill take it back to him in a few week to check it again. I also thought i had a leak on my right rear cleaned it off and it never came back. My buddy told me it was the same thing just excess assembly lube.
Thanx i figured it was a legit thing. It was just a class 1 leak no dripping or puddling. When I found it i probably had 500 or less miles on it and seemed to be rather dirty to be oil. So i cleaned it off and took it in to get looked at. Hopefully this is my only problem with the truck other than that windshield they replaced that got stained from the dealer advertising.
