Thanks for your help Mazdarangerguy
but if you are right, that would means, that everyone or the most with Explorers would have the same problem, cause that is the same engine, isn't it?
When the problem does occur at my truck, i just can start the engine with accelerator pedale fully pressed, that means, that the engine needs more air, cause it became to much gas. Do you agree? However it happened just one time, and the battery was really weak, I did replaced it and I am waiting now for colder weather.
Do you mean the upper or lower intake gasket?

thsnks for the reply! When the truck finally starts it idles perfect. The wired thing is it only has a hard time starting first off in the morning and if its below frezzing, if it is hotter it fires rifgt up. Once Ive started it in the morning it will start every time even after sitting at work for 9 hours and its realy cold. The truck runs and pulls strong even at high speeds. I work 9:00 pm to 6:00 in the morning
I am having the same problem with mine. Everything that I can find on here, and other forums point to intake gasket (upper). They are around 15 bucks for the set (3) to do the job. Here is a link that someone posted for me on another forum. I think it's a thread on this forum. It's a good step by step of replacing the gaskets. I am going to attempt it this Sunday, seeing it's my only day off this week. Everything you have described, is the exact problem that I am having with mine. I'll let you know how I make out... if I get to it this week.
sfxtech, Thanks for the link! Let me know how it gos. If the intake gasket was leaking wouldnt it affect the idle and overall performance, and not just when its below freezing? Maybe someone will chime in and let us know.
thanks, miike
Mike, I thought the same thing. Then someone on another forum suggested that the cold air would cause the gasket to shrink just enough. Then when the engine is warm, it expands again, and seals just fine. I have been chasing this for a while now, the problem I have is I live in Las Vegas so the temp is usually not cold enough for there to be a problem.
Im not sure if that is my problem because it dosent idle ruff once it starts. I would think it would idle rough untile the enine ran for a minute and heated up the seal a liittle. let me know what you find. thanks
Tomorrow's the day. Getting up early to hit the store and pick up a torque wrench, then I dig in. Tomorrow's my only day off this week, so I hope I get it done. I don't really see it taking too long, but.... you never know. I'll let you know how it goes.
Well it took no time to do the gasket work. I got started around 9:30 this morning and was done by 12. That included going to sears, autozone, and harbor freight tools.
Anyway, there are some pic's attached of the progress. I don't know if this was the problem or not.

As you can see from the before and after it looks like there might have been some leaking going on for some time. I am concerned that I didn't fix the problem though.
The first start up after the repair, I had the infamous instant crank, start, stumble, stumble, stumble, for about 5 seconds, then perfect idle. Shut it down, started it back up, and no problems.
So... I have about 20 miles on it since the computer had it's power back, and the check engine light hasn't come back on yet. Like I said, I'm not very conifdent that I fixed it, but I will let you know.
No coolant loss. So far so good, even if it didn't solve my problem with my trouble codes, it helped. I just noticed that it is running a lot smoother. Before if I didn't get the clutch and gas just right on start off, it would chug and run rough. Now it is a lot more forgiving. Time will tell, I will keep you posted.
Well I hope I'm not cursing myself by saying this, but I think I fixed it. This morning it was 32 degrees out when I went to work, I thought I would stumble after I started it, but it fired right up. I'll let you know if the light comes back on, but it looks like I may have fixed it.
Well, it rarely gets that cold here. (I live in Vegas). It was 32 when I went to work the other morning, usually anything below 45 for me and it had a rough time starting. Since I have replaced the gaskets it has only started rough once, and that was the first start up after the repair. I have over 70 miles on it since then, and no check engine light, I think it's fixed!
Good to hear you believe you've put the fix on your problem sfxtech.
Now how is your troubleshoot going Mike???
Did you ever get around to doing a KOEO fuel pressure leak down test???? If so what did you find???? I know you said you checked it after it set overnight & psi was flat.
Question is, how long does it take to leak down after you do a KOEO pressure test????
Once you know the answer to that, you'll know your next best move in your troubleshoot.
