The bronco came stock with 3.50 gears front and rear.
I bought a pre assembled center section for my 9" for about $500, that came with 31 splines(what the 9" comes with), 4.56 gears, and a spool from M.A.E. Racing. You can't beat that price, b/c a r&p would cost $150, master install kit would be $100, and a spool would be about $100, so that'd be an easy $350 in parts alone, and this was so simple to take out old section, and pop in the new one.
Since you are going to be trailering it without to much road use, the spool would be perfect, and 4.56-4.88 gears.
full spool eleminates the carrier altogether and everything bolts to the full spool. a mini spool only replcaes the spider gears inside and if you decided you didnt want to be locked up, replace it with a set of spiders
oh, ok. is there any difference in strength between the two? I think I'll probably go with the mini because its cheaper and the ability to go back if I really hate spool for some reason (which i doubt).
That looks like the exact same kind I got. I emailed the guy, and got him to make it $500 even with shipping. A full spool is alot stronger than the mini.
The main reason is because the cross pin tends to break, so a chromoly cross pin would be preferable.
stock for stock i see no advantage of a 60 over a 9 inch, they are both weak and can be broken with 35's fairly easily...if you throw money in either they can be made to handle anything......i would suggest a 1 ton rear
The 9" is a fairly easy fix, as you can just get a complete centersection and just bolt it up and add oil, leaving you only to have to replace the outer axle bearings. If your not going to use huge tires the 9' should hold up ok. Also remember, that if you change the gears out back, you'll also need to regear the front, and you can't just drop a new centersection in that.
OK then, I'll be placing an order for the 9inch center section with mini spool and 4.56 gears, unless someone says its going to blow up as soon as I try to make a turn on the street and then I'll have to reconsider. I can probably manage the extra money for a full spool if you would say its absoluety needed, but I'm a little low on bronco funds right now.
Time and money are both constraints here, its torn apart in my dad's garage which needs to be cleared out for the snow plowing business if its starts snowing.
edit: merry christmas everyone!

woo! got about $500 in gift cards for summit racing today, looks like most of that will go towards a regear of the front axle, but I'm a little confused as to what I need. In my cart I have:
RMG-6902421
Gear, Ring and Pinion, 4.56:1 Ratio, Dana 44, 3 Series, Set
RMG-8310331
Ring and Pinion Installation Kit, Bearings and Shims, Dana 44, Kit
SAG-DS706025X
Carrier, Open Differential, Steel, 30-Spline, Dana 44, Each
-the carrier says it comes without spider gears - can my old ones in the front be reused? I can't seem to find any for the dana44 on summit.
-do I need all new bearings with an installation kit? I just added the one with the most parts based on age of the vehicle, this is probably the first time this case will be opened.
Also, I counted the splines on the 9inch axle shafts and there's only 28, not sure if thats an issue for strength or not, but its a good thing I counted before ordering a 31 spline center section.
ok, the races are that things that are all chewed up in that picture I posted, right? how are they replaced?
MSR-9MTR - are these the bearings I'll need? there are a lot of different sizes I see.
I also find it strange that it has the 28 splines, because it had the trailer special package, you would think they would want something stronger for that package. Maybe its a replacement rear in there.
Probably off a F-100, I thought the 78-79 Broncos came stock with 31 spline rear ends. Plus, it looks like your seal sits in the axle instead of on the axle shaft, that says swapped to me.
> on the passenger side where the bearing rides looks to be worn down pretty badly,
> how big of an issue is this?
I can't really tell by the pictures. On mine I put a bead of red RTV along the seal and bearing area and squished the bearing in so I would not get leaks when I put the axle in.
Around here bone yard rear axles are $135 drum to drum no matter what the axle. Before I spent $500 to fix a 9 inch, I would go to Sterling or even a Chevy 14 bolt.
I broke my 9" running 31s behind a 390, I can't imagine a 9" surviving off road with any kind of horse power with 35s, which looks like the tire size what you have on the Bronco.
Of course I did over load the truck sometimes carrying firewood....
