Ranger cruise control
The cruise control on my 97 Ranger (2.3 5 speed) hasn't worked since I bought it. Nothing happens when I hit the ON button, but the cruise light does come on when I hit the SET button, whether or not I've already pushed ON. Regardless, it won't do anything to maintain speed. It may be unrelated, but just the other night I noticed that only the left hand side buttons (ON and OFF) are illuminated on the steering wheel when the dash lights come on.
Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting?

Check to make sure the throttle cable is hooked up to the throttle body. There are 2 cables, the one that goes to the gas pedal (odviously), and another that hooks up and goes to the servo on the passenger fender buy the windshield washer tank. You may have to remove the plastis cover over the throttle body to see. If the cable is hooked up to the throttle body, unhook it, and unhook the cable on the servo side by pushing in the little latch and twisting it. You will be able to see if it's broken, if it's not that, then you might have a problem in the brake light cicuit causing it to shut off.

I know on my 99 ranger 4.0 that has air bags the controls run threw the clockspring. I'm not sure how the 97 is but this may be something to check out! There are fuses also to look into.Good luck.

I have an 88 2.9v6-4wd, mine doesn't work either... I didn't know that about the 2nd cable on the throttle body. Im likin' this site more and more.
