Sorry - another cam phaser question!

My 04 FX4 seems to have the cam phaser knock. It has had it since the day I bought it. My question is will it hurt anything if I do not get it fixed. I really dont want the dealership cracking open the engine if they dont have to. My warranty only has about 3,000 miles left.
Thanks

Why take a chance? If your under warranty you should get it fixed. My 04 with 70K does it and I would get it fixed in a heartbeat if it was under warranty. A dealer quote me $1,900 to fix this. I just don't have the extra money to do it right now.

knock

I had the same issue with my 05 FX4. I had the dealer fix it and haven't had any issues with it since. It's been about 1000 miles.

When you took your truck in, how loud was the knocking?

I know all 5.4's have that upper-head slight ticking, so at what volume is it a "problem"?

Thanks,
CMOS

The knock was definitely louder than normal. My dad pointed it out to me, then after that I could notice that my passenger side was louder than the drivers side when I would listen near the tires. It still has that ticking that everyone talks about, but it isn't near as loud as before. I could also notice the noise while sitting in my truck at idle. It was just different than normal.

I also listened to a bud's F-150 to compare. Maybe that'll help. If you think that your's is making more noise than normal, I suggest taking it in and having a tech take a look at it.

Mine is pretty darn quiet. I have to really listen to hear the ticking. I'm just trying to understand the criteria for a "problem" with this part. Thanks for the feedback.

I could hear mine from inside the truck with the windows up. And the sound is more of a "knock" than a "tick". The sound is heard at idle after the oil heats up and thins out, and the sound goes away above 1,000 RPM.

I had mine fixed under warranty @ 12k. I now have 35k on it and no problems.

Go get it fixed. I was concerned about tearing into the engine also, but I just could not take it anymore. Besides, do you think you could sell it if you had to with it making that noise?
